America’s Got Talent contestant Skilyr Hicks dead at 23
A young artist who appeared on the popular talent show in the US was found dead on a bathroom floor at a friend’s house.
Skilyr Hicks, a former contestant on “America’s Got Talent,” was found dead at a friend’s home in South Carolina on Monday, a report said. She was 23 years old.
“She will live on through her music,” Hicks’ mother, Jodi, told TMZ, which broke the news of the death.
Her mother told the outlet that her daughter suffered from substance abuse and mental health issues.
Police told TMZ Hicks was found on a bathroom floor with drugs and paraphernalia and died of a suspected overdose. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Hicks, who leaves behind her mother and four siblings, had some run-ins with the law including spending time in a Georgia jail in 2017 for allegedly assaulting three family members — including her grandmother.
She was also arrested at age 20 in 2018 for underage drinking, after blowing 0.126 when police were called to another domestic incident involving her sister.
Hicks performed a song she wrote on Season 8 of NBC’s talent show competition in 2013 when she was just 14 years old.
She impressed judges Mel B, Heidi Klum, Howie Mandel and Howard Stern enough to make it to the second round, then was eliminated before the show’s live rounds.
During her appearance Hicks revealed she had lost her father a few years before the audition and taught herself to play guitar and sing.
