Abbie Chatfield finally reveals truth behind infamous Bachelor moment
Abbie Chatfield has finally revealed the truth behind her iconic scene on The Bachelor – contradicting her earlier version of the story.
Abbie Chatfield has finally revealed exactly what happened during her viral introduction to Matt Agnew on The Bachelor in 2019.
The FBoy Island presenter and radio host became the subject of plenty of ridicule after she appeared to misunderstand Matt’s job when they met in the premiere episode.
After he told her he was an astrophysicist, a beaming Abbie quickly replied: “I’m a Gemini!”
Afterwards, Abbie claimed she had been making a joke, and the producers had edited her comment to make her look “dumb” – a story which Matt himself publicly supported.
However, broaching the topic on the Back to Reality podcast recently, Abbie, 27, shared a different version of what had happened.
“I walked up to [Matt] and I go, ‘What do you do?’ And he goes, ‘I’m an astrophysicist’,” she explained.
“And then I literally looked around to the crew and I went, ‘I know this isn’t the same thing, just so we’re aware … [And then I asked Matt] ‘What’s your star sign?’
“And then he was like, ‘I’m a Leo’, and then I said, ‘Oh, I’m a Gemini!’ They’d cut out the middle part and just gone, ‘That’s my response’.”
Four years on, the clip gained traction again recently after Khloe Kardashian shared it with her 308 million Instagram followers.
Back in 2019 as the show was airing, Abbie told news.com.au that she and Matt had “similar senses of humour” and added, “He absolutely understood that it was a joke.”
“Obviously, a lot more happened off camera, and Matt and I had a really good laugh about it at the time,” she said.
Abbie added that she wasn’t laughing, though, when her “joke” went viral, with people assuming she was “dumb”.
“Oh my god, at first I was absolutely mortified, and I was really upset,” she said about the clip.
“As time went on, I think people started to realise it was a joke. There were more and more comments flooding in (on social media) saying, ‘I think she’s kidding. I don’t think she’s that dumb’.”
Speaking to The Kyle and Jackie O Show after the promo went viral, Matt stuck up for Abbie.
“She’s very clever, very witty and loved to wind me up,” Matt told hosts Kyle and Jackie O.
“Oh, so she was joking?” Kyle asked.
“Yeah. She knew how to wind me up, and you can see based on my reaction it landed particularly well on me, and she got the desired effect, I think,” Matt said.
