Hamish and Andy back with a bang ... literally
20-YEAR-OLD Caitlyn never expected the radio stars to answer her phone call, let alone invite her to fly to Sydney to be a part of their big comeback show.
THE golden boys of Aussie radio are officially back.
Yesterday afternoon on a boat in Sydney Harbour, Hamish and Andy held their People’s Launch Party to celebrate their return to drive radio after five long years.
They were joined by 300 excited fans from around the country including a handful of listeners who were invited so they too, just like the radio duo, could launch something to the people of Australia.
There was a mum of three who launched her new boob job (a crowd favourite on the boat), there was the guy who launched his new jacket, which he’d feared was “too cool” for him to wear in public, and there was Andy Lee, who not only launched his new show but also literally launched himself into the freezing Harbour by transforming into a human cannonball.
The two-hour show was a classic example of what Hamish and Andy do best — make their listeners the stars.
So rather than rave about how great it is to have the lads back on air or speculate about their huge salaries, I thought I’d take a leaf out of Hamish and Andy’s book and focus on one of “The People”.
20-year-old Caitlyn Beath and her boyfriend Shaun moved from Queensland to Victoria in August last year.
“We had flights scheduled just to go on a holiday,” said Caitlyn, “But there wasn’t much going on in the town that we were living in so about a week out from the holiday, I said to my partner, ‘Lets just sell everything and move to Victoria for good.’”
And they did.
They settled in Mirboo North (about 155 kilometres east of Melbourne) and a few months ago, on their way to the local cinema they stopped at a McDonalds.
“I saw a sign on the community notice board that Gippsland FM was starting their youth program,” said Caitlyn.
“I love talking to people and I love the idea of being able to inform them and just play them some awesome Australian music.”
So she emailed the co-ordinator, learnt the ropes, and has recently landed her own show on Wednesdays from 5-6pm.
“Last Monday I was driving to the studio for practice and I was listening to Hamish and Andy (who were not-so-secretly broadcasting on air last week) and they were asking people to ring up and explain what they wanted to launch at the People’s Launch Party.
“I thought, ‘why not,’ so I called them up and told them that I’m launching my community radio show and even though I am a rival (on Wednesday’s, Caitlyn will broadcast at the same time as Hamish and Andy) they said I could come to the party.”
Yesterday, in front of the huge crowd and with hundreds of thousands of people listening in around Australia, Caitlyn was invited on stage to officially launch her new show.
She was also given a present by Hamish and Andy — her very own heavily produced radio promo (including a personalised message from Delta Goodrem) that she can play during her new program.
For Hamish and Andy it was just another funny segment, like the thousands they’ve done in the past.
But for Caitlyn, it was the experience of a lifetime.
“The fact they even showed interest in me, I was so shocked,” she told news.com.au after the party.
“It really touched me that they went to so much effort to make the promo, just for me.”
And now that she’s seen the professionals at work, she can’t wait to get home to start trying to emulate Hamish and Andy’s success.
“They’re inspirational,” said Caitlyn.
“Watching them, they’re so cool and casual but also so serious about their work.
“You can connect with them really easily and I find them so relatable. I just want to have the same connection with people listening to me when I’m on the radio.”
But she’s only missing one thing ...
“I still need to find my very own Andy,” laughed Caitlyn.
Good luck to her, and not that they need it, but good luck to Hamish and Andy too, oh and welcome back.
