Fitzy and Wippa’s most awkward moments

FITZY and Wippa have opened up about their most awkward moments and boy are there some doozies.
The loveable larrikins have worked together on Nova for more than five years and in that time they’ve had quite a few faux pas, not only in front of each other but also in front of some of the world’s biggest stars.
In honour of the lads’ latest role hosting 20 to One on Channel Nine (Tuesday’s at 7.30pm), we asked Fitzy and Wippa to count down some of their most awkward moments together.
Here’s what they came up with:
TINA BURGER
Wippa: Sounds like a fat version of Tina Turner doesn’t it? Well it was meant to. Prior to my marriage Fitzy organised a last weekend of freedom which climaxed in me butchering Tina Turner’s Simply the Best on stage at the footy while dressed in high heels, sequins, and wig. I think the 80,000 people that had turned up to see the Rabbitohs take on the Roosters were totally confused. Dad hasn’t spoken to me since.
DYING HARD WITH BRUCE WILLIS
Wippa: We interviewed Bruce Willis and during the chat I offered him a beer, only to find out that he is a recovering alcoholic. I then asked about Demi Moore and he very quickly told me to ‘stop’. I replied with ‘stopped’.
MADDEN MIX UP
Fitzy: When we were we told that we had 10 minutes to chat with Jessie J before the start of The Voice this year, we got there nice and early so we’d be prepared. Jessie J walked in with her entourage, we hit record and just as I was about to introduce her, one of the Madden brothers walked in and sat next to Jessie. 20 people were in the room staring at me, waiting for me to say hello, but to who? Was it Joel or Benji? I couldn’t tell!
KATTER CAN’T PULL
Fitzy: Probably our greatest ever achievement was breaking the world record for throwing a car the furthest distance using a trebuchet (a type of catapult). We aptly named it the “Bob Katter-Pult” and hired the Independent politician to come along and pull the ripcord. But after a huge build up, Bob didn’t have the strength to pull the cord!
TACKLE OUT
Wippa: Remember that scene from Titanic where Kate Winslet poses naked and Leo sketches her beautiful body? We got Fitzy to recreate that famous scene and had 10 artists come in to sketch the big man. But Fitzy he had no idea the entire office was hiding quietly behind a strategically hung curtain. You wouldn’t believe it ... but the curtain dropped and the poor guy was exposed to his colleagues. I must not have tied the curtain too well.
THE CONFUSINGLY NAMED TAIO CRUZ
Fitzy: How would you pronounce his first name? Ta-yo? Tie-o? Well apparently I completely stuffed it and he wasn’t happy with my pronunciation. Our chat got off to an awkward start which was followed by an even more awkward interview with the British rapper who wore his huge sunglasses inside the studio. Let’s just say we wound up the interview pretty quickly.
MODERN FAMILY FIANCE
Wippa: When the cast of Modern Family arrived on our shores, Sofia Vergara knew that her and I were going to get on like a house on fire. I had recorded a song called Can I be your date? which was based on the Dawson Creek theme song, I don’t want to wait. But when I finally got close to Sofia, her fiance was standing next to her and I felt a little awkward gushing over his future wife. So in a blatant attempt to suck up to him I invited him on our show to talk about his product, Onion Crunch.
BAD SMELL, EVEN WORST SIGHT
Fitzy: We created a fragrance called “Generic” which was designed to be, you guessed it, a generic aroma for both men and women. Apart from the severe migraines people got after smelling it, things went from bad to worse when we filmed a commercial for it in the penthouse at the Ivy bar in Sydney. One of the models Nova had hired to take part in the ad was less than impressed when she asked to feed Wippa grapes on a leopard print rug while he was only wearing a turtle neck sweater ... oh, and a G-string.
FORGOTTEN LYRICS
Fitzy: We created a children’s character called Wippa the Whale and at first there were glimpses of a successful future in the children's entertainment industry. But those hopes were dashed when the feeble whale performed for the first time at a Sydney Shopping centre in front of hundreds of fans and completely forgot the lyrics to his famous song. The confused looks on the faces of children and mothers indicated that the whales’ career was over and we had to free Wippa the Whale back into the wild.
WEDDING ANNIVERSARY FAIL
Fitzy: It’s one of the darkest days of my career. I forgot my wedding anniversary. The worst part was that my wife alerted Wippa first and my heart dropped when he told me on air.
HANDSHAKE FAIL
Fitzy: We consider ourselves pretty “street” but when it comes to handshakes, but unfortunately I still haven’t mastered the correct goodbye. I’ve been left hanging not once but twice while searching for a fist bump from Malcolm from the band MKTO and also legendary rapper, T.I.
EX CONFRONTATION
Fitzy: We had a segment called “Telephone Number Neighbour” where we would get celebrities to ring the person that had the same mobile as them but with one digit different. Hugh Jackman was the highlight and a woman had a meltdown on air when Jacko introduced himself. Wippa and I had to ring our “Number Neighbours” but I ramped things up when I entered Wippa’s ex-girlfriend’s number without him knowing. He hadn’t spoke to her in years.
You can see Fitzy and Wippa on 20 to One on Tuesday nights on Channel Nine at 7.30pm and you can hear them weekdays on Nova 96.9 between 6-9am
