Grant Denyer has opened up about periods he’s “not proud of” in an exceptionally candid new statement released on social media today.

Grant Denyer breaks down after Dancing with the Stars performance

Grant Denyer has opened up about a recent TV moment that “nearly broke” him – an emotional performance on Dancing With the Stars that left the usually chirpy TV host in tears.

Denyer and dance partner Lily Cornish performed to the classic Peter Gabriel / Kate Bush duet Don’t Give Up – a song Denyer revealed held special meaning for him.

Posting footage of the performance on Instagram today, Denyer revealed the 1986 hit was “one of the main reasons I’m still here today.”

“Used to listen to it a lot through the tough and dark times. Fought back tears the whole way through this one, dancing to it was exceptionally difficult but absolutely beautiful,” he wrote.

Regrets? Yeah I have a few. But this is not one of them.

Life is hard. There’s some periods I’m not proud of and we all make mistakes, some more than others. It can be painful and sometimes full of shame.

But it’s never too late to become a better person, a better partner, father, employee, better friend and family member.”

Denyer was full of praise for his dance partner Lily Cornish.

Denyer thanked his dance partner Cornish for “creating one of the most special experiences of my life” – but in another recent Instagram post, he revealed the pair face a new challenge as they try to progress in the competition.

Hard-to-watch rehearsal footage shows Denyer suffering an “extremely painful shoulder dislocation” while practising for the dance that will air on this Sunday’s episode, the paso doble:

“Some old racing injuries are starting to plague our preparations putting this Sunday’s routine at real risk,” Denyer wrote, calling the injury “a huge setback” to their chances on DWTS.

News of the injury comes after Denyer yesterday shared a photo of his “poor little bubba”, daughter Sunday, in the half-body cast she’ll have to wear for the next 12 weeks to fix her severe hip dysplasia.

The heart-rending picture shows Denyer’s wife Chezzi cradling Sunday, who turned one last month, in a hospital room. The infant is in a cast that extends all the way from her feet up to her armpits:

“Oh my poor little bubba! I’m so so sorry to see you in this state,” Denyer captioned the photo. “Sunday had a special procedure today in hospital to fix her severe hip dysplasia.

“The poor thing has to wear a half body cast for the next 12 weeks which will be so uncomfortable and immobilising for her, but will be worth it in the end.

“Hang in there my sweet, you’ve already shown us how brave and bright you are.”

Denyer’s wife Chezzi last month told the couple’s followers they were “surprised” by their youngest daughter’s diagnosis, which saw them scramble to reorganise their lives so Sunday would be comfortable in her cast over the coming months.

“Obviously, this has been our priority as we quickly organise new car seats, sleeping bags and bits and pieces to make the next few months a bit more bearable for little Sunday,” she wrote on Instagram.

“Who I have to say has surprised us all with this diagnosis of a dislocating hip joint … because she’s just the happiest little cherub all the time.”
