Australian TV personality Grant Denyer has shared a photo of his “poor little bubba”, daughter Sunday, in the half-body cast she’ll have to wear for the next 12 weeks to fix her severe hip dysplasia.

The heart-rending picture shows Denyer’s wife Chezzi cradling Sunday, who turned one last month, in a hospital room. The infant is in a cast that extends all the way from her feet up to her armpits:

“Oh my poor little bubba! I’m so so sorry to see you in this state,” Denyer captioned the photo. “Sunday had a special procedure today in hospital to fix her severe hip dysplasia.

“The poor thing has to wear a half body cast for the next 12 weeks which will be so uncomfortable and immobilising for her, but will be worth it in the end.

“Hang in there my sweet, you’ve already shown us how brave and bright you are.”

Denyer’s wife Chezzi last month told the couple’s followers they were “surprised” by their youngest daughter’s diagnosis, which saw them scramble to reorganise their lives so Sunday would be comfortable in her cast over the coming months.

“Obviously, this has been our priority as we quickly organise new car seats, sleeping bags and bits and pieces to make the next few months a bit more bearable for little Sunday,” she wrote on Instagram.

“Who I have to say has surprised us all with this diagnosis of a dislocating hip joint … because she’s just the happiest little cherub all the time.”

According to the International Hip Dysplasia Institute, hip dysplasia is a general term for infantile hip instability, dislocation, or shallowness of the hip socket. Approximately 1-in-100 infants will need treatment for the condition.

Denyer’s family update comes a week after he broke down on a recent episode of Dancing With the Stars.

Denyer and dance partner Lily Cornish danced the Viennese waltz to the classic song Don’t Give Up, which Denyer said was about “absolute despair, when you think you can’t go on” – something he could relate to.

The 44-year-old TV star was referring to his near-fatal monster truck accident in 2008 which caused serious spinal injuries that took months of recovery.

“I’ve spent my life being a smiley television host that pretends everything is OK,” he added. “That is not real life. It’s OK to struggle. It’s OK to hurt. It’s OK to reach rock bottom because you can come out of it, you can climb out of it with a bit of love and a little bit of help, and that was the case for me,” he said.
