Nine’s Today show ‘live’ weather reports aren’t actually live at all

VIEWERS tuning in to Nine’s Today show expecting a live weather forecast this week have been met by a not-so-live surprise.

News.com.au staff couldn’t help but notice that weatherman Steve Jacobs, who has been delivering the nation’s weather from South Africa since Monday, has been prerecording his segments in advance.

This morning at 6.38am co-hosts Karl Stefanovic and Alicia Loxley crossed “live” to their roving weather presenter at Sanbona Wildlife Reserve in the Western Cape of South Africa, where it looked to be a delightfully sunny day.

But hang on, wasn’t it 10.38pm over there?

During Tuesday morning’s cross Jacobs acknowledged Karl and Alicia — only problem was that it was actually sports reporter Ben Fordham who crossed to him. Whoops.

Today show EP Mark Calvert confirmed this week’s weather has indeed been prerecorded, saying: “Nothing unusual — if we didn’t occasionally, we’d never be able to take our viewers to half the planet!”

Perhaps it is nothing out of the ordinary (and we’re certainly enjoying seeing the sights of South Africa via Jacobs — thanks Channel 9) but one has to question just how accurate Nine’s weather report is, given it has been filmed hours in advance.

But hey, at least Steve Jacobs is having a whale of a time. Carry on.
