‘Too much skin’: Today show sports presenter shocks co-hosts by lashing Super Bowl halftime show

The Today show’s sport presenter criticised the Super Bowl half time show, saying performers Jennifer Lopez and Shakira sent a “bad message”.

The Today show’s sports presenter has shocked his co-hosts by unleashing on two of the world’s biggest stars, saying they showed “too much skin” and sent a “bad message” to young kids at the Super Bowl.

Jennifer Lopez and Shakira performed at the Super Bowl LIV halftime show at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on Sunday. Lopez told AP before the performance she felt it had come at “the right time” and hoped sharing the stage with Shakira would inspire and unite people.

This morning at the opening of Channel 9’s Today program, sports presenter Alex Cullen dismissed the performance, telling his co-hosts he felt it was “too much, too much”.

“You don’t like that kind of thing?” his co-hosts asked after the comment.

“It wasn’t for the music, let’s say that much,” Cullen continued. “It was too much. Too much skin. I thought it was a bit over the top.”

The hosts, including newsreader Tracy Vo and host Allison Langdon, seemed taken aback, asking Cullen what he meant by “too much skin”.

“I agree, I thought it was disgusting all that skin, not my cup of tea,” Stefanovic joked sarcastically, making his co-hosts laugh.

“I thought it was too much. Sending out a bad message to the young kids,” Cullen continued, standing his ground.

“Especially young women,” Langdon chimed in. The broadcast then crossed to newsreader Lara Vella, filling in for reporter Tim Davies, who couldn’t help but joke about the comments before moving on.

“I’m still getting over what Alex just said then,” Vella said. “No hip shaking today I promise Alex,” she joked.

The presenters then joked it was “lucky” Vella had no skin showing “because Alex and Karl will be tut, tut, tutting you right now”.

During the performance, Lopez and Shakira wore a number of different outfits, including matching silver and gold tassel jumpsuits. Shakira began the show in a stunning sequined dark red mini dress with knee high boots. Lopez also wore a leather bodice with a full pink skirt in another part of the performance, later removing the skirt so she could perform a pole dance on stage.

In another part of the lengthy performance, Lopez brought out a dual Puerto Rican-American flag while her daughter sang the lyrics to Bruce Springsteen’s Born in the USA.
