Today show: Allison Langdon’s cheeky swipe at Karl Stefanovic
Karl Stefanovic and Allison Langdon oozed chemistry on the Today show this morning as they took several friendly jabs at one another.
Allison Langdon kicked off her new role on Today by taking a cheeky swipe at her co-host Karl Stefanovic.
This morning the new hosts of Channel 9’s breakfast show crossed to reporter Charles Croucher in Los Angeles to discuss today’s Golden Globes.
Describing the Globes ceremony, Croucher said it “is pretty well known as the drunker awards”.
Without missing a beat, Langdon joked, “Karl will be right at home.”
“It’s your comparison, Ally, not mine,” Croucher replied.
The joke was in reference to Stefanovic’s infamous drunken appearance on the Today show the morning after the 2009 Logies.
“I really was drunk or at least I certainly looked and sounded drunk,” Stefanovic said about the incident in a 2014 interview.
This morning was Langdon and Stefanovic’s third show on air together after their January 6 start date was brought forward to Saturday, January 4 so they could anchor Weekend Today’s coverage of the bushfire crisis.
But some of Stefanovic’s friends clearly missed the memo that he was retuning to TV early, with the host this morning sarcastically thanking his “loser mates who rang me up yesterday and said, ‘Good luck tomorrow!’”
“Thanks for watching over the weekend!” he joked.
Whereas last year’s Today co-hosts Deb Knight and Georgie Gardner were criticised for their lack of chemistry, Stefanovic and Langdon seemed like best buddies this morning and the banter flowed freely.
Despite much of the program being dedicated to bushfire coverage, the co-hosts managed to keep the show light and entertaining with several jokes at each other’s expense.
At one point in the show when discussing his bad night’s sleep, Stefanovic said, “I woke up and there were fireworks going on, actual fireworks”, to which Langdon cheekily replied, “In the bedroom?”
Stefanovic also took the mickey out of himself when chatting about Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon’s Apple TV+ show Morning Wars.
In the drama, which is nominated for three Golden Globes, Steve Carell plays the host of a breakfast TV show who is sacked amid a sexual misconduct scandal.
“I can’t stand it … way too close to home,” Stefanovic joked on air this morning. “Egotistical male host? Unrealistic, unrealistic. Luckily there’s none in this room.”
The humour was appreciated by viewers who took to social media to welcome Stefanovic back to their screens.
“Loving seeing you Karl & Ally, very professional but also entertaining,” wrote Jo Byrnes on Facebook.

Karl seems relaxed and back to his old self so glad the last year was boring
The new Today show co-hosts have their work cut out for them as they attempt to try to close the huge ratings gap between the Nine breakfast show and Channel 7’s Sunrise.
