Karl Stefanovic admits: ‘I was really drunk’ on post-Logies Today show

CHANNEL Nine’s Today co-host Karl Stefanovic has finally admitted what we all suspected: he was drunk as a skunk during that infamous 2009 post-Logies broadcast.

In an interview posted on YouTube, Stefanovic opens up about the episode in which he appeared flushed, slurring his words and frequently giggling.

“It wasn’t any different to any other year — we all get smashed at the Logies and go to work the next day; we’d done it for years and years. But this was the first Logies when stuff really started working on the internet,” he says.

Stefanovic recalls that, following the broadcast, he had no idea of the stir he’d created until a colleague contacted him and told him he was going to be the subject of a story on Channel Seven’s Today Tonight.

“I remember seeing it on Today Tonight and going ‘Oh god.’ I really was drunk, or at least I certainly looked and sounded drunk.”

Despite this, Stefanovic seems to have no regrets about the incident — suggesting it may even have been beneficial to his career.

“I was worried about it initially, but I think it broke down a barrier for me. It’s that age-old theory in TV that if you haven’t harmed anyone, the public might find it funny. The public have been tremendously supportive — the only drama is that every time I go out now, everybody wants me to get drunk with them,” he laughs.
“For me to look back on it, it’s quite funny now.”
