Matt Doran has reportedly hit “breaking point” following his botched Adele interview and the pressures of caring for his ill mother.

Matt Doran makes grovelling on-air apology for botched Adele interview

Channel 7 reporter Matt Doran is taking a mental health break following his infamous interview with Adele

The Weekend Sunrise host flew to London in November last year for the exclusive interview, but reportedly offended the 33-year-old musician when he said he hadn’t listened to her latest album 30.

According to The Sunday Telegraph, Doran has now checked into a mental health rehabilitation facility.

A family source told the publication he is “battling severe and chronic depression” following the pressure of looking after his ill mother Paula who suffers from a chronic disease — and the scandal surrounding the Adele interview.

They said the news anchor has hit “breaking point” with the trigger for his “terrible head space” the botched interview with the English singer.

The Adele interview was part of a package Channel 7 reportedly brokered which also included broadcast rights to Oprah Winfrey’s One Night Only interview and concert.

However, the singer’s label Sony refused to release it, leaving Channel 7 with no footage from the interview following Doran’s admission.

Doran was quick to issue an apology to Adele and her Australian fans who were furious the interview never aired.

In his lengthy apology, the host admitted he “deserves” the “bulk of the savaging”.

“(The email from Sony) didn’t mention Adele but it did contain a link to her album. The genuine, deadset truth is that I missed it, the most important email I’ve ever missed in my life,” Doran said in November following the debacle.

Seven West Media CEO James Warburton also shared his views at the time, telling news.com.au it was “obviously disappointing” the interview never made it to air.

“The extra piece to that would have obviously been some exclusivity and that would have been great content for Sunrise and Sunday Night the week before to promote the special, and we didn’t get that and that’s really disappointing,” Mr Warburton said on the matter.

“The Oprah Winfrey special for us was absolutely fantastic and did its job in brilliant ratings and streaming numbers,” he added of what did air, which generated 747,000 metro viewers.

When asked what lessons were learnt in light of the saga, Mr Warburton said all they could do was move on.

“This is a first … nothing like this has ever happened before. We’re in Sydney … it happened in London. So what do you do?”

“Matt’s a pro, he’ll get on with his job,” he added of the Weekend Sunrise host.

He also said Doran’s got “two choices” — to “collapse in a heap or get on with his job”.

“He’s said his piece and I’m sure everyone would probably wish that they could have done things differently but that’s life and we’ve got to get on with it,” Mr Warburton said.

However, given the unfolding circumstances and personal matters Doran has been dealing with, it is understood the 38-year-old, who has worked for Seven for five years, is due to take a few more weeks off.
