Karl Stefanovic's two-year-old daughter Harper became seriously ill

Karl Stefanovic has revealed it’s been a “terrible year” for his family, saying his two-year-old daughter has battled ongoing health issues.

The 48-year-old Today co-host made the candid admission on the Nine breakfast program while speaking to Dr Nick Coatsworth, saying his toddler Harper May was undergoing asthma treatment amid a series of medical scares.

“My daughter Harper, she’s been getting a lot of sicknesses. It’s been a terrible year,” said Stefanovic, who shares Harper with wife Jasmine Stefanovic.

“She got crook last week with influenza. She has an asthma kind of thing (device) now. But (she doesn’t have) asthma. It is helping. So a lot of kids are going through that at the moment.”

Stefanovic, who also has three children with his ex-wife Cassandra Thorburn, previously revealed his “really scary” ordeal when he and Jasmine had to rush their toddler to hospital in June.

He told viewers Harper initially had a “sniffle and a cough” before her condition rapidly escalated to a racing heart rate and high temperature, which hit a worrying 40C.

“There were literally thousands of parents in similar situations,” Stefanovic said at the time.

“We are lucky it wasn’t more serious, and we were lucky we had good people around her.”

In response to Stefanovic’s story, Dr Coatsworth claimed the effects of lockdown were having an impact on both children and adults as people’s immune systems respond to the country opening up again.

“We’ve had this awful season of respiratory viruses,” Dr Coatsworth said. “Almost certainly attributed to lack of human movement during lockdown, which of course we needed to do. But this is the price we pay.

“Our immune system has evolved over millions of years. It’s there to help us, it’s there to protect us. When we’re exposed to viruses, it certainly makes us stronger for the future.

“So, yes, some children and adults will need asthma medication for a short period of time,” Dr Coatsworth said, in reference to Harper’s asthma treatment. “Particularly for the post viral cough.”

Meanwhile Karl’s co-host Allison Langdon came down with sickness herself this week and walked off-set during Monday’s show.

“I am actually going to take off this morning. I have just got a little bit wobbly,” she said, explaining that she had started to feel unwell but didn’t want to leave her co-host “in the lurch”.

“I didn’t notice, because you are wobbly a lot on a Monday morning,” Stefanovic joked.

“I would have stayed home, but it didn’t sort of hit until I got to work. Best for everybody, and have a great show,” Langdon added, rising from her seat with her phone in hand.
