Former Sunrise host David “Kochie” Koch has announced his next move two months after saying farewell to the host desk.

Koch wrapped up more than two decades in the top job at Seven’s morning TV show in June.

On Wednesday, he revealed that he was taking on a new challenge as economic director of Australian price comparison website Compare The Market.

“Helping people make positive financial decisions is something very close to my heart, and I know the Compare the Market team feel the same,” he said in a statement.

As Sunrise’s in-house financial expert, Koch built a reputation for guiding Aussies through the tough economic times of recent months and helped them tackle the cost of living crisis.

“People have been hit from every direction with soaring energy bills, insurance premiums and mortgage rates – forcing many into tough financial decisions,” he said.

“We want to empower Australians to compare, switch and save wherever savings are available.”

He said it felt like the “obvious next step” taking on a role that would give him a chance to use his influence to help other people.

“For me, it’s always been so important to find roles where I can make a difference and I’m not comfortable sitting back when I have the power to help,” he said.

“Looking at Compare the Market’s mission to drive comparison, boost competition and save Australians money, it was the obvious next step.”

Compare the Market chief executive Rob Clancy said the company was thrilled to welcome Koch, adding that he would be a senior voice on economic issues and personal finance concerns that affect everyday Australians.

“Kochie’s extensive credentials in finance and business journalism will take our research to the next level and ensure we can help Australians make better everyday financial decisions,” he said.

Returning to the screen on Wednesday morning to announce the news, Koch admitted to the Sunrise team that he had enjoyed his new schedule of late nights and sleep-ins.

“I feel like a new man,” he said.

“I’m not sure (wife) Lib is enjoying me being awake so late at night because it interrupts all of her shows.”
