SHE’S used to making people laugh, but these days Julia Morris spends six months of the year crying.

“It’s so draining,” says the House Husbands star. “I go home to (husband) Dan and say ‘I just cried all day’.”

As Gemma, Morris has had her fair share of weepy storylines, let down by Lewis (Gary Sweet), and facing life as a single mum in the season which wraps up tomorrow night.

Morris, 46, went to drama school in her early 40s to make the unlikely transition from comedian to ‘serious actor’, but still identifies as ‘100 per cent comedian’.

“All comedy, particularly stand-up, is based in creating drama and tension,” she says.

“A lot of comedians end up becoming very decent dramatic actors. We’re used to playing the many roles just through our words.

“Acting is not easy. But having the skills of the stand-up running alongside it, or the comedic timing, makes a huge difference.”

She names Jim Carrey as one of the best slashies — a comedian turned actor.

“When he does stuff like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind … his performance in that continues to hurt me, it’s so good. “I just turn up, imagine how it must feel and kind of do it like that.”

When she’s not shooting House Husbands, Morris reverts to ‘corporate mode’.

“Like any mummy, I’ve always got five jobs going on at the same time,” she says.

“These six months I keep up the comedy thing. It doesn’t take long before people forget what you do,” she says.

She has also been sewing up a storm, making costumes for daughters Ruby and Sophie.

“I’m sure I’m overcompensating during these couple of weeks because I’m not working,” she says.

“A couple of the mums are like, ‘You’re so lucky because you know how to sew’.

“I can’t sew, I don’t know how to read a pattern. I just went and bought a sewing machine for $200 at Spotlight because I didn’t know that I couldn’t do it.”

Season four of House Husbands has been approved, and Morris hopes there will be even more.

“I hope it means I get to kiss Gary Sweet on the lips again, or else I’m not turning up,” she jokes. “I’m not over it at all.”
