John Oliver on Donald Trump: Last Week Tonight video hammers presidential candidate

TV HOST John Oliver rips into Donald Trump in a no holds bar tirade. Then he revealed a little-known secret about the billionaire.

WHILE Chris Rock tackled Hollywood’s systemic racism and sexism as host of Sunday night’s 88th Academy Awards, a different kind of political advocacy was unfolding over at HBO‘s Last Week Tonight.

After calling out President Obama for failing to come up with a definitive plan to close Guantánamo Bay federal prison, host John Oliver leapt right into examining the nitty gritty of Donald Trump‘s campaign, The New York Post reported.

Yes, at long last, Oliver addressed Trump.

“Our main story tonight is Donald Trump. And I say that knowing every time his name is said out loud, he has a shattering orgasm.”

The host reasoned with his largely liberal audience members, citing Trump’s snagging of three states during the Republican primaries.

“Polls show him leading most Super Tuesday states,” Oliver explained, “Which is a big deal.” He compared the real estate mogul turned reality star turned presidential candidate to a proverbial back mole on the country: “It may have seemed harmless a year ago, but it has gotten frighteningly bigger and it is no longer wise to ignore it.”

The mission of Oliver’s episode wasn’t to necessarily concede to Trump’s continuously growing band of campaign followers, but rather, break down why exactly he’s gotten so far.

And while he could have chosen a dozen of different angles for this particular segment, the host stuck with the political discourse that’s followed Trump since he announced he was running: he tells it like it is, he’s running an independent campaign, and he’s a successful businessman. “Donald Trump can seem appealing until you take a closer look,” warned Oliver.

“Much like a lunch buffet at a strip club. Or the NFL. Or having a pet chimpanzee.”

Oliver broke down each pillar of the narrative surrounding Trump, starting with the authenticity of his notoriously fabricated speeches and public statements, which managed to bring the conversation pretty close to home.

On a morning news show, Trump claimed that the Last Week Tonight team invited him on as a guest “four to five times.”

Oliver not only disputed the blatant lie — they never once invited Trump — but added a sincere, “It was genuinely destabilising to be on the receiving end of a lie that confident … I’m not even sure he knows he’s lying.”

Oliver then took aim at Trump’s claim that he’s “self-funding” his campaign. He’s actually donated a mere $250,000 - and loaned the campaign $17.5 million that will need to be paid back. Trump has also accepted $7.5 million in donations.

Oliver segued to shine light on the candidate’s reputation as a businessman.

After noting Trump got his start by receiving a massive inheritance from his father, he pointed out how much the real estate mogul has lost over the years because of bad investments.

But the real scrutiny from Oliver wasn’t about Trump’s questionable funds, it was about the inconsistencies in his beliefs and plans as a candidate: “If he’s actually going to be the Republican nominee, it’s time to stop thinking of the mascot and start thinking of the man. Because a candidate for president needs a coherent set of policies.”

Oliver didn’t stop there, however, digging even further into the Trump rabbit hole, only to find out that Trump’s family name isn’t Trump at all, but Drumpf.

Yes, you read that right. Drumpf is Donald J’s original family name and Last Week Tonight celebrated this newly discovered information by circulating the hashtag #MakeDonaldDrumpfAgain and purchasing donaldjdrumpf.com where you can install a web browser extension that will handily change all the Donald Trump news that comes across your feed into Donald Drumpf news.

Trump, who is known to read and watch everything about him he can get his hands on, has yet to respond to the Last Week Tonight team.
