How GoT author George R.R Martin wanted Tyrion Lannister’s story to unfold

Fan favourite Tyrion Lannister survived eight seasons on Game of Thrones, but author George R.R Martin initially had a different plan.

Game of Thrones’ Tyrion Lannister could have embarked on an entirely different adventure if George RR Martin had had his way.

The master of wit, played by Peter Dinklage, won over audiences with his snappy one-liners and loveable roguishness.

However, in an early proposal for the books, Tyrion could have met a grisly end at the hands of none other than Jon Snow (Kit Harrington), reports The Sun.

In Martin’s original notes, he explained that Tyrion would also develop feelings for Arya Stark (played by Maisie Williams in the series) after allying with The North in a bid to bring down his own family.

“Tyrion Lannister will continue to travel, to plot, and to play the game of thrones, finally removing his nephew Joffrey in disgust at the boy king’s brutality,” he wrote.

“Exiled, Tyrion will change sides, making common cause with the surviving Starks to bring his brother down, and falling helplessly in love with Arya Stark while he’s at it,” he went on.

“His passion is, alas, unreciprocated, but no less intense for that.”

He also noted how this: “Will lead to a deadly rivalry between Tyrion and Jon Snow.”

The proposal, which dates back to 1993, was leaked online and spans the entire Song of Ice and Fire saga.

TV bosses confirmed the divergence from the original proposition, with HBO chief Casey Bloys insisting alternative endings didn’t make it to set.

“I don’t think they actually shot multiple endings, they [show runners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss] have had this in their heads for a long time,” he said.

Other notable differences between the series and Martin’s notes include the fate of Catelyn Stark.

Martin had originally pitched for the matriarch to flee to The North in a bid to protect her daughter, only to encounter the nefarious White Walkers.

Instead, show execs decided to have her slaughtered at the infamous Red Wedding.
