THE new trailer for Game of Thrones’ sixth season was full of tantalising clues. These are the 10 you might have missed.
THE new trailer for Game of Thrones’ sixth season was full of tantalising clues.
After a forensic analysis of every frame — sounds fancy, doesn’t it? — we’ve pulled out 10 of the most intriguing titbits for your consideration.
Any potential spoilers you read below are purely speculative.
1. THERE WILL BE AN IMPORTANT FLASHBACK
A brief shot near the end of the trailer shows us three men engaged in battle. Two of them are wearing the same Stark armour Ned used all the way back in season one, and the third has a Targaryen sigil on his breastplate.
This scene can only be a flashback, perhaps seen through one of Bran’s visions. It probably takes place at the Tower of Joy, where Ned found his sister Lyanna shortly after the Targaryens’ overthrow. If so, it could confirm a long-held fan theory about the true identity of Jon Snow’s parents.
2. SPEAKING OF BRAN’S VISIONS ...
We mentioned Bran. As you may recall, he sat out the entirety of season five, learning to control his mysterious powers off screen — but he seems to feature prominently in the new season.
At the climax of the trailer, we see him turning around and coming face-to-face with the White Walkers’ leader, otherwise known as the Night’s King. This could be another vision. For Bran’s sake, we sure hope it is.
3. DAENERYS IS KHALEESI NO MORE
After fleeing Meereen on the back of her favourite dragon at the end of season five, Daenerys ran into a Dothraki khalasar. She appears to have become their prisoner. We see her walking in the shadow of a giant horse statue, suggesting she’s returning to Vaes Dothrak.
Meanwhile, Jorah and Daario are clearly in pursuit of their queen (in more ways than one, we daresay).
4. MELISANDRE’S HAVING A CRISIS OF CONFIDENCE
“The great victory I saw in the flames. All of it was a lie,” Melisandre tells Davos. She sounds as shaken as she looked at the end of last season, having watched Stannis burn his own daughter alive, only to be crushed.
Plenty of fans are expecting Mel to step in and revive Jon Snow. We have seen a red priest bring someone back from the dead before. But Mel’s crisis of confidence could be a significant hurdle.
5. CERSEI’S HAD ENOUGH OF THIS S***
The Queen Mother’s walk of shame has only strengthened her determination to resist the High Sparrow and his cult of followers. The trailer shows us a confrontation between Cersei, alongside her new corpselike guardian (whom we presume to be the undead Gregor Clegane), and the devout Sparrow Lancel Lannister.
“Order your man to step aside, or there will be violence,” Lancel says.
“I choose violence,” Cersei replies. It’s oooooon.
Jaime’s back in King’s Landing too. He’s keen to reinforce the couple’s siege mentality.
“We’re the only ones who matter. And everything they’ve taken from us we’re going to take back, and more,” he tells his sister/lover.
Finally, we see a bunch of heavily armoured soldiers apparently confronting the High Sparrow in the middle of King’s Landing. That’s juicy.
6. TYRION IS BEING TOO NOSY FOR HIS OWN GOOD
The book readers among you know Tyrion is obsessed with dragons. And who can blame him? They’re awesome. But that doesn’t mean he should act on his curiosity.
The trailer shows Tyrion tiptoeing nervously through a dark, dungeon-like room, which is interesting, because Daenerys left two of her dragons chained in the dark, dungeon-like basement of her pyramid. Our guess? Tyrion is trying to catch a glimpse of those dragons.
Don’t be a fool Tyrion. RUN.
7. THE BOLTONS ARE GOING TO FIGHT THE WILDLINGS
There’s no context, but we clearly see a battle between soldiers bearing House Bolton’s ever-so-charming sigil and Tormund Giantsbane’s wildling mates.
8. DOES BRIENNE SAVE THEON AND SANSA?
One scene in a snowy forest shows Sansa fleeing from something. We also see her awkward companion, Theon, at the mercy of a man in a helmet, who’s holding the leashes of several hounds. Who has hounds at his disposal? Ramsay Bolton.
In a different shot — also set in a snowy forest — we see a soldier in the same type of helmet getting cut up by Brienne.
So, here’s an educated guess: Sansa and Theon are tracked down by the Boltons, only for Brienne to save them at the last moment. Sounds plausible, right?
9. DAVOS WIELDS JON SNOW’S SWORD
“I’ve never been much of a fighter,” Davos says, picking up Jon Snow’s sword Longclaw. The camera pans out and we see Jon’s body in the foreground. “Apologies for what you’re about to see.”
Then, as Davos appears to strike out at the other men in the room (who are soldiers of the Night’s Watch), the trailer ends.
10. Arya is still blind
YEP.
Season six will premiere on Showcase on Monday, April 25.
