Meet Games of Thrones 12-year-old scene stealer Bella Ramsey as Lady Lyanna Mormont

GAME of Thrones has had a big season but the pint-sized Lady Lyanna Mormont, played by 12-year-old actor Bella Ramsey, has been the biggest breakout.

THE ladies ruled this season of Game of Thrones.

There was Daenerys’ (Emilia Clarke) temple blaze that took out her chauvinistic Dothraki captors; Sansa’s (Sophie Turner) eleventh-hour manoeuvring that assured Jon Snow’s (Kit Harington) victory in the Battle of the Bastards; and, of course, Cersei (Lena Headey) wiping out the Faith Militant in a wildfire inferno.

But the biggest scene-stealer of them all may be the pint-sized leader of Bear Island, Lady Lyanna Mormont, played by 12-year-old actor Bella Ramsey.

The 10-year-old child ruler made her debut in Season 6, Episode 7, The Broken Man, in which Ser Davos (Liam Cunningham) convinces her house to join the North’s campaign against Ramsay Bolton (but not before she threw some shade on her visitors from House Stark: “Lady Sansa is a Bolton — or is it a Lannister? I’ve heard conflicting reports.”).

In Sunday’s Season 6 finale The Winds of Winter, with dissension brewing within the ranks of the North, it’s Lady Lyanna who rules the room of grown men, calling out the leaders of the noble houses who refused Jon Snow’s call for help to take back Winterfell.

“We know no king but the King in the North whose name is Stark,” she declares. “I don’t care if he’s a bastard. Ned Stark’s blood runs through his veins.”

Even Lord Manderly (Sean Blowers) knows he’s outmatched: “Lady Mormont speaks harshly. And truly,” he admits, before he and the others throw their support behind Jon Snow as the King in the North.

Despite her command of a scene, Game of Thrones is actually Ramsey’s first acting credit — and though she was only allowed to watch a few snippets of the show prior to filming her first episode, she slid easily into the fierce role.

“It all kind of comes naturally when I become Lyanna, because it’s in her nature; it’s just who she is,” she told HBO.com. “I loved the script for Episode 10 [The Winds of Winter] — how she doesn’t care that she is the youngest person in the room, and proceeds to shame the three leaders.”

Indeed, in her few minutes of screen time, Lyanna has quickly become a fan-favourite character, and images of her holding her hand up to silence an adviser or stone-faced on horseback riding into battle have launched a bevy of memes. Of the positive viewer reaction, Ramsey tells HBO.com, “I didn’t expect anything like it.”

The talented young actor has already lined up her next gig: Starring in the TV adaptation of The Worst Witch book series as the title character, Mildred Hubble. It’s currently filming in the UK for its debut on the BBC’s kids network next year.

No word if Ramsey will be back on Game of Thrones next season, but after her scene-stealing performance this year, we’d totally support a Lady Mormont campaign for the Iron Throne.
