GAME of Thrones is filled to the brim with esoteric language and symbolism referencing George RR. Martin’s vast fantasy world, Westeros.

But it turns out makers of the show planted a nod to one of the world’s most beloved comedy shows and no one noticed it.

Entertainment site HitFix has revealed how a scene from season four was paying homage to an infamous Monty Python skit.

The reason it was so difficult to realise is that it occurred in one of the three fictional languages made for the television adaptation of GOT. The languages were made up by a linguist named Dave J Peterson and only one of them (Dothraki) has been officially published.

However the linguist has revealed the pivotal scene when Daenerys arrives at Meereen and is taunted by a lone rider is practically a re-enactment of the “I fart in your general direction” exchange with John Cleese in Monty Python.

In an interview, Game of Thrones writers admitted what was actually being said in the scene that drew inspiration from the one above.

“In fact, the [Meereen] rider was yelling in Low Valyrian,” they said.

While in the scene Missandei translates the man’s taunts, she does a little more than paraphrase.

This is what he actually said: “I fart in your general direction! Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries. You don’t frighten us, English pig-dogs! Go boil your bottoms, son of a silly person! I wave my private parts at your aunties.”

These cheeky shoutouts to other TV shows are known as Easter eggs by fans, and they don’t get much bigger than that.
