Game Of Thrones’ final series could be delayed until 2019

WE might have to wait two years to find out who takes the Iron Throne, according to the president of HBO.

GAME Of Thrones fans might have to wait an extra year to find out how the series ends.

The president of US network HBO — which makes the show — says it’s possible that the final season will now air in 2019.

Casey Bloys told Entertainment Weekly: “Yeah. [showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss] have to write the episodes and figure out the production schedule.

“We’ll have a better sense of that once they get further into the writing.”

The makers of the show are making every effort to ensure it goes out in a blaze of glory, so no time or expense will be spared, writes The Sun.

Bloys said: “One of the hallmarks of the show has been how cinematic is it. The show has proven that TV is every bit as impressive and in many cases more so, than film.

“What they’re doing is monumental. When you see these battles in season seven, and what I imagine season eight will be, it’s a big, big show.

“We’ve done a lot of great shows, but this one combines the complex characters we love with a huge cinematic scope. I think this is the first show to prove that can be done.”

The seventh season of George R.R. Martin’s series will return on July 16 and will feature just seven episodes.

Meanwhile, while HBO has confirmed that four Game of Thrones spin-offs are currently in development, Bloys has warned there’s no guarantee they’ll actually make it to our screens.

“This is a really embryonic process. I haven’t even seen outlines. In the press at large, everybody said, ‘there are four spin-offs’ and they assume that means each one is happening and we’re going to have a new Game of Thrones show per quarter. That’s not what’s going on,” he clarified.

“The idea is not to do four shows. The bar set by [Benioff and Weiss] is so high that my hope is to get one show that lives up to it. Also, this is a long-term plan. Our No. 1 goal is the seventh season this summer and getting the eighth season written and aired ... If any of these scripts come to pass, you’re not going to see anything air anytime close to the season eight finale.”

The network are keeping details of the spin-off projects well under wraps but have revealed they will “explore different time periods of George R.R. Martin’s vast and rich universe.”

Game of Thrones season seven will premiere on July 16.
