Prince Harry reportedly splits with girlfriend Cressida Bonas after two years
PRINCE Harry has split with girlfriend Cressida Bonas, but he is angered at reports about the reason behind the breakup.
EVERY glance, every hand-hold, every appearance they made in public together was a sign Prince Harry was set to propose to girlfriend of two years Cressida Bonas.
At least that was what the British tabloids and magazines were saying but instead it was yesterday indirectly announced the pair had split amicably and would go their separate ways ... at least for now.
“It’s very, very sad that they have decided to split,” the source close to the couple said today.
“It’s very amicable but they have decided to go their separate ways.”
The split comes only a month after they attended an official engagement together for the first time, fuelling speculation the royal court wanted to make clear the couple were becoming serious.
There had been suggestions in recent weeks the 25-year-old Cressida had become too “needy” for the third in line to the throne who turns 30 this year but those close to the couple said that was wrong and had angered the pair.
“This suggestion that the prince supposedly “dumped” Cressida because she was “too needy” is so wide of the mark,” friends told the British press.
“It is a very amicable split and they are still very much the best of friends. They have just decided to go their separate ways.”
Bonas was apparently keen to focus on her career having only just graduated in contemporary dance from the Trinity Laban Conservatoire in Greenwich, London, last year and earlier finishing studies at Leeds University.
“Cressida has decided she wants to focus on her career and Harry is really keen that she is allowed to get on with her life,’ they said.
“He is furious at this suggestion that the split was in any way because she was relying too much on him. Cressida is one of the most independent people he knows.”
Prince Harry was this weekend expected to fly to the United States with brother Prince William for the wedding of close friend Guy Pelly where they were invited to be ushers.
Hours before the revelation yesterday, Prince Harry attended an event to mark the selection process for the Invictus Games, a Paralympic-style championships for veterans which Australian armed forces also take part in. Harry chatted with 25 hopefuls in wheelchair rugby and cycling hoping to take part this September.
“I have seen how powerful sport is as a means of rebuilding confidence as well as aiding with physical rehabilitation,” the Prince said.
His official mouthpiece Kensington Palace last night declined to comment on the apparent split in his personal life. The palace had quashed speculation an engagement was imminent when the couple attended an event at Wembley Arena last month and were openly affectionate. There were also reports Harry and Cressida were supposedly to make a trip to Sydney together as he attended an official military function last year although palace sources scotched that rumour and pointed to royal protocols and how such a holiday like that together would be seen.
But there were reports anyway in recent weeks her family had held a “summit” to discuss future wedding plans.
Reports last night were suggesting the break-up was just a “breather” for Bonas to find her own way for a bit with the couple likely to get back together again, possibly in a matter of months, much the same way as Prince William split for Kate before they got back together and became engaged. Some had also said Cressida had felt a little suffocated by all the royal protocols and minders the young couple had to put up with.
Cressida Bonas: Almost a royal?
Earlier this month Prince Harry and Cressida travelled to Kazakhstan for a high profile skiing holiday which friends said was “just a holiday for young lovers”.
After having been introduced by the Prince’s cousin and Cressida’s friend Princess Eugenie, they began dating around May 2012 getting together at The Valley festival on friend Arthur Landon’s Hampshire estate. Months later they holidayed on Sir Richard Branson’s Caribbean Necker Island for Sam Branson’s birthday in the summer of 2012 and last year was a summer of music festivals together.
The couple had taken a breather when he headed to Afghanistan on a tour of duty but seemed to pick up where they left off with trips away together and stays at the Queen’s private Sandringham Estate.
The prince’s most serious previous girlfriend was Chelsy Davy with whom he had a long-distance relationship off and on for seven years while the Prince was training in the Army and overseas and while Chelsy was at university in South Africa.
