An American rapper who was signed to R&B star Future’s label has died on his birthday following a run-in with police.

Young Scooter, 39, an Atlanta rapper, was transferred to medical services in Atlanta to the Grady Marcus Trauma Center on Friday, according to The Atlanta Journal.

His cause of death is currently undetermined, as an autopsy has not been completed.

According to Atlanta Police Lt. Andrew Smith, police responded to a call about a dispute with a weapon at a home.

Cops then set up a perimeter outside the house after a man shut the door on officers.

Two men later fled from the rear of the house with one returning to the home and the other jumping two fences as he was fleeing.

According to reports, Scooter was the man who jumped the fences.

“When officers located him on the other side of the fence, he appeared to have suffered an injury to his leg,” he told reporters, before refuting rumours that the rapper had sustained an injury from police.

“Just to be very clear, the injury that was sustained was not via the officers on scene. It was when the male was fleeing.”

Smith added that the rapper fractured or injured his leg in some way when he fell, causing bleeding that led to his eventual death.

Following news of his death, heartbroken rapper Quavo took to Twitter to share a video of the later star, telling fans he “didn’t understand”.

Real name Kenneth Edward Bailey, Scooter became a big presence in Atlanta before he was signed to Future's Freebandz label and later Waka Flocka Flame’s Brick Squad Monopoly under Gucci Mane.

The rapper had slowly built up a cult following in the US through a series of steady mixtape releases, and first appeared on the US charts when he featured on Future’s song Jet Lag back in 2018.

During his career he also made appearances on singles from Future and Young Thug and worked with artists like Juicy J, Kodak Black and Rick Ross.

His 14th mixtape record, Trap’s Last Hope, was released last year and included appearances from Futur and EST Gee.
