US rockers Yellowcard cancel Sydney show last minute over health woes
Yellowcard were forced to cancel the Sydney stop on their critically acclaimed Aussie tour just hours before going onstage.
Yellowcard pulled the plug on their Sydney show last minute on Wednesday night, much to the disappointment of fans.
The band had been due to play at Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion tonight, but singer Ryan Key lost his voice and was forced to axe the gig in the hours before they were due to take to the stage.
“It’s the most awful feeling to have to make this statement,” said Key in a statement.
“I woke up today and my voice [was] just completely gone. I saw the doctor this afternoon, and she advised me not to play the show tonight to prevent any further damage. I give you my word I’ve done everything possible to recover for tonight, but I just couldn’t make it happen.”
The statement concluded with a promise that both the band and organiser Destroy All Lines were collectively working “to figure out rescheduling as soon as possible”.
“We will update you all at our earliest convenience once we have further news. We appreciate and thank you for your patience and understanding during this difficult situation.”
Fans took to Twitter to share their disappointment, with one writing: “Well this sucks!” and another commenting: “Wow worst birthday ever”.
Yellowcard’s upcoming shows in Newcastle (Friday) and Brisbane (Sunday) are set to go ahead currently.
The popular US rockers are currently touring Australia to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their fourth album, Ocean Avenue.
Released in 2003, the album featured singles such as Only One and the title track and is widely considered to be one of the defining pop-punk albums of all time.
They’re playing shows alongside special guests Motion City Soundtrack and Plain White T’s.

The band went on hiatus back in 2017 and haven’t toured Down Under since February of the same year.
Their latest tour has been receiving rave reviews from Australian critics and fans since they arrived.
In a five-star review of their Melbourne show, The AU Review wrote, “This show was truly special, and will surely go down in Yellowcard‘s history. All three bands put on a stellar performance, but Yellowcard brought the energy big-time, with each member giving it their all. They sounded incredible, and the crowd gave that energy right back to them.”
