Taylor-gating: Ticketless Swifties are making sure they get a taste of the Eras Tour fanfare
It’s no secret most Swifties will go to extreme lengths to get a taste of the Eras Tour, but some dedicated fans are taking it to a whole new level.
Ticketless Swifties have gathered outside the Melbourne Cricket Ground for a second night in a row to ensure they too get a taste of the Eras Tour, despite warnings against the trend sweeping the globe.
Hundreds of diehard Swifties flocked to the stadium on Saturday night to tailgate the musician’s second Melbourne show.
Footage posted to social media show the fans crowded outside the stadium singing along to an early classic - Love Story.
Equipped with snacks, sequins, and a whole lot of Taylor fever, fans were spotted singing and dancing to the star’s music outside the stadium.
It’s the second night in a row fans have gathered outside the sold out show in the hopes they’ll hear the megastar perform despite not having a ticket.
Those who managed to find a spot were filmed singing along to her hit songs, including Lover.
While some may refer to the phenomenon as loitering, fans have dubbed the international trend “Taylor-gating” in honour of their idol. For many Swifties who missed out on tickets to the sellout shows, it’s their only chance to be a part of concert night festivities.
While crowds appeared to be well behaved on Friday evening, “Taylor gaters” were removed from the MCG concourse after just a few songs.
According to the Herald Sun, the dedicated fans were removed by security after a discussion with police and ushered to a nearby grassed area.
As it braces for large crowds, Sydney’s Accor Stadium has spoken out against the trend and encouraged only those who purchased a ticket to attend.
“We want to ensure the best experience for all, which is why only fans with a valid ticket should attend the precinct on show nights,” a spokesman said last month.
“To avoid disappointment, only fans with a ticket to the event are encouraged to attend on the night of their respective show.”
In an effort to combat the growing trend, the MCG also banned the erection of marquees and tents outside the stadium and told fans there would be “no activations in Yarra Park or screens showing the concert live”.
But it isn’t just Aussie Swifties who are showing their dedication through “Taylor gating”.
Swift fans in Chicago, Seattle, Los Angeles and various other international tour destinations have taken to congregating outside arenas, with some prepared to enjoy the three hour long set while seated in car boots and camp chairs.
Hundreds of Tay Tay fanatics are expected to continue to gather outside the MCG on Saturday and Sunday as the Melbourne leg of the tour continues.
Swift will perform four shows at Sydney’s Accor Stadium next week.
