Shane Warne’s kids watch as Coldplay’s Chris Martin pays tribute to late cricketer

Chris Martin surprised Perth crowds by singing a heartfelt song he wrote for Shane Warne, as the late spin king’s kids watched on.

Coldplay's emotional Warnie tribute

Coldplay frontman Chris Martin spontaneously wrote an emotional tribute to Shane Warne during his trip to Australia, which he performed at his sold-out Perth concert Sunday night.

The British singer, 46, hosted back-to-back performances at Optus Stadium at the weekend, dazzling crowds with the band’s greatest hits including Yellow and Viva La Vida.

But he added a new song to his set list for Sunday’s show, delivering an acoustic performance of an original he said “came [to me] overnight while I was asleep” in honour of his “good friend”.

Friends come, friends go / There are some people you’re lucky just to know

If I could, I’d do it all again / Thanks for everything, Shane

The late Australian spin bowler’s three children Brooke, 26, Jackson, 24, and Summer, 20, were in attendance in the crowd for the sweet gesture, each posting videos of the moment on their Instagram pages.

“I have no words. Dad this is for you. We love you, we miss you. Chris you nailed it, we love you,” Brooke wrote alongside a clip of the tribute.

Elsewhere in the song, Martin honoured Warne’s legendary love of cigarettes, cricket and fast food:

We met in an elevator 2001 / You told me about Simone, your daughter and your son

You ate some French fries and I nibbled on an avocado / We tried to explain cricket to Nelly Furtado

You puffed dart after dart, you made me a passive smoker / Tried to explain to me all about poker

It was a special weekend for the Warne children, who posted a flurry of videos from backstage at the concerts, where they were joined by their mother Simone Callahan.

In one sweet clip, Martin can be seen sharing a group hug with the family.

“Magical few days in Perth lots of special moments and beautiful memories to hold onto,” Callahan wrote.

“Feeling very grateful thank you Chris and all the awesome Coldplay crew. Just the best.”

Brooke had earlier shared a video from Saturday night’s show, in which she had a behind the scenes role.

The influencer helped concert staff throw inflatable balls into the crowd while Coldplay sang their feel-good hit Adventure of a Lifetime.

It’s not the first time Martin has paid tribute to Warne since his sudden death in March last year.

The Grammy winner performed at Warne’s state memorial, via video clip, singing the cricketer’s favourite Coldplay song Yellow.

Martin and Warne enjoyed a years-long friendship, with Warne even joining the singer onstage in 2016 at Etihad Stadium in Manchester, UK.

Coldplay stopped halfway through performing their song Don’t Panic to invite Warne onstage to play the harmonica.

Meanwhile, Coldplay announced to much fanfare they’d be returning to Australia in November next year to perform four shows in Melbourne and Sydney as part of their Music Of The Spheres World Tour.

Pre-sale tickets go on sale November 29, while general ticket sales begin on December 1.
