The American singer has opened all of Taylor Swift’s concerts in Australia – and on Monday she had a surprise announcement of her own.

Pop princess Sabrina Carpenter has made her only live appearance on Australian TV during her Aussie trip to open for Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour.

In the interview on the Today show, not only did host Karl Stefanovic try to start a singalong, Carpenter announced she would be returning to Australia to perform her own tour.

Recounting how Carpenter paid tribute to Olivia Newton-John in the second Melbourne show with a stunning rendition of Hopelessly Devoted To You, Stefanovic took the lead in the unofficial studio choir.

“Yeah, get it Karl,” Carpenter said with a grin.

“I really, honestly, everywhere I go I try to cover a song that feels like it fits the place I’m in, and you know that’s it’s also been one of my favourite songs for the longest time,” she said.

Fans also packed out the Nine studios in Sydney for a chance to meet the American megastar.

In a Q&A with her adoring fans after the studio interview, Carpenter confirmed she would be returning to Australia “ASAP” to perform her own world tour.

“My managers are looking at me with a smile – so yes, yes,” she said.

“That’s very much happening and also just being able to be here like performing for technically the first time this weekend has just made me want to come back ASAP.”

Carpenter said she loved Australia and enjoyed playing for such a “loving, happy, excited community” in Sydney and Melbourne.

“I genuinely just feel like I’m so lucky to be doing what I love,” she said.

She said she also loved the accent from Down Under and was trying to learn some slang to fit in more.

“I don’t know if this is slang but I’ve just heard about this Tim Tam Slam that I’m supposed to be doing that I’ve not tried yet.

“But I’ve heard you could use it as a straw which sounds so crafty.”

After being rained out of her set because of Sydney’s wild weather on Friday night, Carpenter said she didn’t care because it meant she got to play a song with Swift instead.

“I actually did not care at all that my set got cut because that was just the coolest thing in the world,” she said.

“And you know, I love her and have admired her since I was very, very little – so that moment was definitely, definitely hard to describe.

“(Swift) knows that my first ever cover on YouTube was her song and then on Tuesday night, that was a very full circle moment.

“My mum just called me the next day and she was like I don’t know how you didn’t just start sobbing – I think in the moment, you know, I love performing so much and getting to watch someone who’s just so good at it … It’s just very, very special.”
