Spotify Wrapped: 2021 sent us down a dark hole

Spotify Wrapped is here for 2021 and the most streamed songs for the year have been revealed. With one clear winner.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year — you know, when Spotify Wrapped comes out and we all realise what a dark place lockdown sent us to.

Last year, after a particularly sad break-up, nearly all my most played songs were Lizzo. Clearly I was going through something, but, you know, any excuse to play Lizzo. This year, my results are none of your business. It was a long, strange lockdown.

No doubt your social feeds will be packed with friends sharing their top played tunes, but there are some clear favourites in Australia, and the world over.

Let’s start Down Under. Queen Taylor Swift was the most streamed artist of the year, which is pretty impressive considering Red (Taylor’s Version) only dropped a few weeks ago.

Just imagine if she’d had more months for us all to get nostalgic and hate on Jake Gyllenhaal?

Glass Animal’s song Heatwaves took the top spot as the country’s most streamed track. So I’m guessing there’ll be a lot of happy people knowing that they’re headlining Splendour In The Grass 2022.

The Kid LAROI was also solidly featured this year, being Australia’s most streamed local artist and also scoring one of the top streamed songs globally for STAY (with Justin Bieber).

Proving she had much more under her belt than Driver’s License, Olivia Rodrigo’s album SOUR topped the country’s (and the world’s) most streamed album, followed by Ed Sheeran’s = then The Kid LAROI’s F*CK LOVE (SAVAGE).

Speaking of Driver’s License, it was globally the topped streamed song for 2021 with 1.1 billion streams, which prompts me to ask: are you all doing OK? Lil Nas X’s MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name) came in second, which could mostly be attributed to my personal workout playlist.

No one could get enough of Olivia Rodrigo in 2021.

The global top albums list was rounded out by Dua Lipa’s Future Nostalgia, Justin Bieber’s Justice, Ed Sheeran’s = and Doja Cat’s Planet Her.

The top artist in the world this year? Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny with 9.1 billion streams. He was followed (in order) by Taylor Swift, BTS, Drake and Justin Bieber.

Doja Cat’s album 'Planet Her' rounded up the top 5 most streamed albums, globally.

In podcast world, Aussies couldn’t get enough of The Joe Rogan Experience (depressing), ABC News Briefing and Casefile True Crime.

If you haven’t checked your Spotify Wrapped results yet, get ready for a bunch of new features — like ‘2021: The Movie’ and ‘Your Audio Aura’ — to help you brag even more about your music tastes.
