Perth Fridayz Live festival attendees rage at Jay Sean and Ashanti’s performances

RnB lovers who attended a Perth music festival have complained about the performances of some of the event’s major international headliners.

Fed-up music lovers have lashed out after paying hundreds of dollars for a Perth music festival only to watch headline artists limp through some of their biggest hits.

Thousands packed out Perth’s HBF Park on November 5 for a chance to catch global artists including Macklemore, TLC, Akon and Craig David.

It was the first time the hugely-popular touring concert had returned after a two-year hiatus due to the Covid pandemic.

But RnB lovers were left with a sour taste in their mouths after Ashanti and Jay Sean spent large chunks of their performances holding the microphone to the crowd instead of singing.

During Ashanti’s performance of her hit ‘Foolish’, the audio was repeatedly stopped, in order to encourage the audience to sing the lyrics.

However, fans rebelled against the performance tactic and joked that they were performing for the performer.

One social media post shared a clip with the caption: “Pay $200 for a ticket just to hear the audience sing and not the artist. This went on the entire night …”

In another TikTok post, a user captioned a similar clip with: “When Ashanti ‘performs’ at Fridayz Live.”

In the video she wrote: “Disappointing was an understatement.”

In the comments, festivalgoers agreed.

“The music stopping is the worst part. I’d rather just have her sing along to her song playing on the speaker,” one comment read.

“Are we performing for them or are they performing for us,” shared another.

“Once is fine but babe what’s going on after the TENTH time,” another comment read.

“I feel like Ashanti should have paid the audience,” wrote another.

‘Nothing worse’ Jay Sean lashed

Similar criticisms were also made about Jay Sean’s set.

During a performance of his 2009 hit, ‘Down,’ Sean barely appeared to be singing and instead relied on the backing track and crowd.

“He didn’t sing?” the TikTok user queried.

“I would’ve been so mad if I paid for any of this… you go to hear them sing not the crowd,” a comment read.

“All of them had their music playing in the background and just signing whenever they want,” another comment read.

“Nothing worse when artists get the crowd to sing their song. Babe who’s paying who?”

Performing at a total of five locations, Fridayz Live also featured other headliner acts including Jeremiah, Shaggy and Havana Brown.

The national festival also held shows in Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide and Melbourne. The last show was held at the Giants Stadium, in Sydney on November 12.
