Kanye West quits secular music, says he’ll make only gospel music: report

Kanye West has finally dropped his highly anticipated gospel album, but the controversial rapper surprised fans with an unexpected announcement, and some people are not happy.

Music and fashion mogul Kanye West has reportedly claimed he will only make gospel music going forward — no more secular music, according to a Chicago music promoter who was in the room when the rapper spoke.

West reportedly made the comment over the weekend at a listening party in Chicago for his new album Jesus is King: A Kanye West Experience, reports Fox Business.

“Kanye also announced that he is no longer making secular music,” said Andrew Barber, owner of music media company Fake Shore Drive. “Only Gospel from here on out.”

West said he is “done being an entertainer,” Barber told Fox Business.

West launched his new album in New York on Sunday (local time) accompanied by his wife Kim Kardashian West, and three of his four children.

He also announced that a documentary of the making of the album, featuring footage of the rapper’s famed Sunday Service will also be released in IMAX theatres around the world on October 25.

Kardashian West teased the album’s track list on Instagram last Friday.

Anyone attending the Chicago listening party was required to leave their mobile phones in locked pouches, so no video has yet surfaced of West’s remarks.

Kardashian West told US talk show The View that the new album was instrumental in West becoming a Christian.

“Kanye started this to really heal himself and it was a really personal thing, and it was just friends and family,” she said earlier this month. “He has had an amazing evolution of being born again and being saved by Christ.”

Over the weekend, West made a surprise appearance at a Chance the Rapper concert in his hometown of Chicago.

Meanwhile, West may have come to Jesus — but some Christians aren’t buying the born-again rapper.

Instead, Christians have been attacking the rapper for “co-opting” their culture, reports the New York Post.

Hundreds of Christians are firing up the Twitterverse — but the controversy about West’s invocation of religious imagery in his work has been around since the early 2000s, critic and self-proclaimed Christian Charlene Kaleina, reportedly told the New York Post.

Kaleina, 68, says her faith is constantly mocked “because of the strange and weird behaviour of people like this man.”

“He may be trying to understand Jesus in his own limited way and we cannot judge another’s soul,” the commercial real estate professional said. “People who follow Christ sense something is not right with this scene.”

Online, hundreds of the faithful felt the album title alone was blasphemous.

“Jesus Is King’ is trending on Twitter,” writes another critic who identifies as an Adventist. “They’re talking about the self-proclaimed god Kanye West, who is a mere man.”
