Kanye West DONDA: Rapper and presidential candidate to release new album

Amid concern for his mental health after a week of worrying behaviour, Kanye said a new album was dropping today. So where is it?

After a week of headline-grabbing family drama and mounting concern for his mental health, rapper and presidential candidate Kanye West is set to release a new album, DONDA: WITH CHILD.

But so far, it’s a no-show - the expected 2pm Friday AEST album drop has come and gone, with rival music star Taylor Swift getting the stage to herself to release her new album Folklore, out today.

The album is named after his late mother, Donda West, and features a recording of her singing on one track.

In a statement to fans released after the outburst, Kim Kardashian explained her husband — among his well-documented mental health issues – is dealing with “the painful loss of his mother.”

West, who announced earlier this month that he was running for president, had shared a revised 12-song tracklist on Twitter on Tuesday, following up on Wednesday with the news it would be released with a movie.

The 12-track LP follows his previous announcement that a new album called God’s Country was in the works. On July 18, West announced the title had been changed to DONDA and that the album would be released on July 24.

Last week, he shared a short clip of a song dedicated to his mother that features on the album.

Following on from the official single Wash Us In The Blood, the clip featured Donda reciting Sound of da Police by KRS-One.

DONDA follows Kanye’s 2019 studio album Jesus Is King, which landed in October of that year following multiple delays.

Cinematographer Arthur Jafa prematurely revealed the DONDA project in May during an Instagram Live stream in a talk with fashion designer Michèle Lamy.

During the stream, Jafa indicated that he was working on video-related material with West for a single from a “forthcoming album” entitled God’s Country.

The release comes after a tumultuous week for Kanye, whose recent behaviour on Twitter has sparked concern for his mental health.

His wife Kim Kardashian is reportedly meeting with divorce lawyers as she grapples with his latest meltdown, in which he launched public accusations at his wife and her mother, Kris Jenner, in a series of tweets.

Among the many posts, the rapper and father-of-four, 43, claimed Jenner and Kardashian “put out a statement without my approval”, branding Jenner a “white supremacist”, and claiming in a further tweet that he has been “trying to get divorced” for years.

The latest flurry of tweets came just one day after West posted, then deleted, a number of claims that his family “tried to lock him up” following his presidential campaign rally in South Carolina, in which he cried while saying that he and Kardashian had once contemplated aborting their daughter North West, 7.

On Wednesday evening, Kardashian broke her silence and begged for “empathy” amid her husband’s “incredibly complicated and painful” bipolar disorder, admitting the family feels “powerless” to help him.

According to US Weekly, the reality TV star and cosmetics mogul is now considering a separation.

Meanwhile, sources also told The Sun that Kardashian has been planning an intervention for her husband of six years in order to get him the help he needs.

“His behaviour and his harmful statements have taken this situation to a whole new level of scary for Kim.”

The source added Kardashian feels her hands are tied when it comes to her husband.
