Freaky Friday sequel is in the works, with Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan to return

Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan are both on board for a Freaky Friday sequel, as the movie marks its 20th anniversary.

Jamie Lee Curtis may be an Oscar-winner now but that doesn’t mean she’s above reprising her role in a cheesy, beloved classic.

A sequel for Freaky Friday is in the works and both Curtis and Lindsay Lohan are slated to return, confirmed The Hollywood Reporter.

The body swap comedy was a massive surprise hit when it was released in 2003, earning $US160 million at the box office from a $US25 million budget.

The film was directed by Mark Waters, whose next project would be Mean Girls which also starred Lohan, and written by Heather Hach and Leslie Dixon. The story was adapted from the 1972 novel and had inspired four previous movies, including the 1976 version with Jodie Foster.

There was also a 2018 movie version which was based the Broadway musical which was based on the previous movies. It’s like an ouroboros swallowing itself.

Freaky Friday was a surprise box office hit.

Lohan played a teenage musician who unwittingly magically swaps bodies with her mother, and hijinks ensue. The comedy about generational misunderstanding and learning to find compassion and empathy for each other turns 20 later this year.

A New York Times interview this week marking the anniversary revealed Curtis and Lohan still keep in touch with other. Lohan recalled Curtis took care of her then 16-year-old self.

“She immediately took me under her wing. I was so nervous to do my first kiss on camera, so she talked to me in my trailer and made in funny so that I wouldn’t stress about it.”

Curtis told NYT the experience of working on the movie taught her that as a parent, she needed to suspend judgment. She said, “Open the ear, listen more. Also, as a parent, we’re sizing up all the time: shoes, clothes, food. It’s all future thought. My lesson from Freaky Friday was to be where your feet are.”

Asked how they felt about the prospect of a sequel, Curtis revealed that she was asked about another instalment when she promoted Halloween Ends.

“Something really touched a chord. When I came back, I called my friends at Disney and said, ‘It feels like there’s a movie to be made’.”

Screenwriter Ellyse Hollander is attached to write the script, although it’s unclear what stage the script is in and whether it was completed before the writer’s strike was called.

Curtis has been going through a purple patch in her career. She picked up an Oscar in March for her performance in Everything Everywhere All At Once. She also released three Halloween movies, and was in Rian Johnson’s Knives Out.

Her next two films are Haunted Mansion, a movie adaptation of a Disney theme park ride, and Borderlands, an action-comedy adapted from a video game series which also stars Cate Blanchett, Jack Black and Kevin Hart.

Lohan recently returned to acting with the streaming movie Falling for Christmas. It was her first film role in several years (her 2019 movie Among the Shadows was actually filmed in 2015).
