Borat has delighted fans by joining social media, praising US President Donald Trump in a series of viral posts over the weekend.

The fictional reporter played by Sacha Baron Cohen became well known after the release of 2006 mockumentary Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan.

In a series of tweets Borat praised Mr Trump’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic, and shared photos of himself wearing a mask mankini. One photo he shared of himself taking off a Donald Trump mask has attracted more than 69,000 likes.

“Premiere Trump just appear on Whitehouse balcony where he took off his mask and threw into crowd for one lucky patriot to wear,” he wrote in another tweet, gathering 6700 likes.

“Premiere Trump true leader – he have prove himself stronger than more than 200,000 of his American subjects,” he wrote in another tweet, which attracted more than 6800 likes. The tweet was referencing the grim US death toll from the coronavirus pandemic, which has now reached more than 214,000.

“Borat has twitter now … and it’s already excellent,” one fan wrote.

“Borat is redeeming 2020! Not even joking when I say this is some of my favourite news this year,” another said.

Last month it was officially confirmed a sequel to the 2006 film had been shot and completed during the coronavirus pandemic, shortly after Baron Cohen was spotted in character in Los Angeles. The sequel, titled, Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, will premiere though Amazon Prime Video.

Little is known about the film, although Baron Cohen was filmed at a political rally in June, where he led conservative group in singing a violent song about former President Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and journalists, threatening to inject them with the “Wuhan flu” and chop them up “like the Saudis do”.

The original Borat film, which was made for $26 million (US $19 million), earned $362 million (US $262 million) worldwide.
