Actress Florence Pugh’s much-talked-about nude scene in Oppenheimer has received a hasty re-edit in some countries - with bizarre results.

Screenshots for the film circulating on social media show how censors in some conservative countries in the Middle East and India, where rules around nudity and sex on screen are stricter, have dealt with one particular scene.

In the original, unedited version of the film - the version viewers will see in cinemas here in Australia or the US - Pugh’s character Jean Tatlock is in the middle of a secret affair with physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, played by Cillian Murphy.

Pugh sits topless in a chair in a hotel room as she and Murphy have a conversation - not that Indian and Middle Eastern audiences will see that. Instead, they’ll see Pugh wearing a hastily-CGI’ed black dress:

It’s not known if any other edits were made to the film in those markets. Oppenheimer is rated MA15+ here in Australia, due to “strong sex and a suicide scene.”

Variety reports that it is common practice for some films to receive edits so they pass the censors in more conservative markets.

Sometimes, the movie-makers refuse to play ball: Recent Disney movies West Side Story and Eternals were pulled from release in several Middle Eastern countries due to the inclusion of transgender and gay characters. Disney would not re-edit the films to exclude those characters, so they were instead banned in those countries.

This Christopher Nolan-directed film tells the true story of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the inventor of the nuclear bomb. With its release on the same day as Greta Gerwig’s much-hyped Barbie movie, the two films have sparked a movie-going frenzy, bringing in huge box office numbers here in Australia over the weekend.

Barbie made $21.5m at the Australian box office last week, easily the biggest opening weekend so far this year.

Oppenheimer earned $9.36 million, with the two films helping the Australian box office to a bumper $34 million weekend.
