Move over Bridget Jones, there’s some new rom-com classics on Tubi
It’s one of the most beloved genres with classics like Bridget Jones to its name, but there’s some new classics itching to be watched.
Remember when Julia Roberts was just a girl, standing in front of Hugh Grant, asking him to love her in Notting Hill? Or when those snooty shop assistants discovered they’d made a “big mistake” by judging her credit limit by her thigh-high boots in Pretty Woman? What about the time Roberts tried to steal Cameron Diaz’s fiance to the strains of Burt Bacharach in My Best Friend’s Wedding?
When it comes to romantic comedies, it’s easy to reach for the reliable Roberts. Or a cute Kate Hudson classic. Or a dose of Renée Zellweger’s bumbling exploits as Bridget Jones. That’s why fans were heartbroken by the death of Colin Firth’s Mark Darcy, Bridget’s stuffy love, in this year’s Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy – a tragic plot twist from author Helen Fielding’s 2013 novel but with moments in the film inspired by the 2016 death of her ex, The Simpsons writer Kevin Curran.
Back in 2013, Fielding revealed the hardest part of killing off Darcy in the books was breaking the news to actor Firth over the phone. “It was one of the strangest conversations of my life because I had to ask if he had someone with him, if he was sitting down, and it was literally as if someone really had died,” she said. Seeing the absurdity of the situation, Fielding added, “Then we sort of started laughing because they hadn’t.”
The four Bridget Jones movies, like so many of the most popular rom-coms, have become part of our lives. Films we curl up with when we are sick, watch at slumber parties with friends, or smile about when we are feeling low. But, as anyone in a long-term relationship knows, sometimes you need to spice things up. And believe it or not, there are some lesser-known lovelorn ladies who deserve your adoring attention.
So, move over Bridget Jones. These three films are ready for your nights-in on the couch – and one of them even has Firth waiting in the wings: The Accidental Husband: Gruff fireman Patrick (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), furious that relationship expert Emma (Uma Thurman) advised his fiancee to jilt him on the radio, decides to spoil her upcoming wedding to English gentleman Richard (Firth).
Accidentally Engaged: When Clarissa (Lexi Giovagnoli) goes home for a wedding, she makes up a little lie about dating major star Chas Hunter (Brant Daugherty) in order to impress her friends. When her story goes viral, Chas agrees to continue the charade in order to avoid bad publicity.
The Way We Weren’t: Each smarting from their bad breakups, Charlotte (Fiona Gubelmann) and Brandon (Australia’s Ben Lawson) make up outrageous lies in order to be the other’s perfect match. After rushing into marriage, however, the truths come out.
