Mattel mistakenly prints porn site on Wicked doll boxes
Manufacturing toy giant Mattel is facing backlash for a major error spotted by fans of the highly anticipated movie adaptation.
Manufacturing toy giant Mattel have made a major mistake in the packaging of their Wicked dolls to coincide with the release of the upcoming movie adaptation of the hit Broadway musical.
Social media users have discovered that merchandise for the film, which stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo as witches Glinda and Elphaba, mistakenly features the URL of an adult entertainment site wicked.com instead of the correct domain for the film, WickedMovie.com.
Although some movie merchandise such as a LEGO set lists the correct website on its packaging, it appears hundreds of Mattel boxes consisting of Glinda and Elphaba dolls feature the web address of a pornographic site on the back of the box.
“Hey @Mattel whoever is responsible for your marketing/packaging for the new official Wicked dolls have made a HUGE mistake!” one user flagged on X, while others were equally shocked.
“That's an insane oversight, someone getting fired lol.”
“This might be the biggest fail in official merch history, especially considering it’s meant for kids!”
“Whoever did the Mattel Wicked Dolls packaging is COOKED.”
“An error of this magnitude is unacceptable.”
The sentiments over on TikTok and Reddit were the same.
“I work in manufacturing. This is on a LOT of people,” one TikToker wrote. “There’s multiple steps that this has to go through before being printed and not a single person thought to visit the website. Mattel didn’t think to purchase the domain.”
“Fun fact: in elementary school I asked my parents for tickets to see Wicked [the musical],” one Reddit user recalled. “My dad told me to find them online so he could look and order. Naturally and logically, I type in ‘www.wicked.com’ into good ole internet explorer. I’m still traumatised 15 years later.”
Mattel have since apologised for the error in a statement to People magazine:
“Mattel was made aware of a misprint on the packaging of the Mattel Wicked collection dolls, primarily sold in the US, which intended to direct consumers to the official WickedMovie.com landing page. We deeply regret this unfortunate error and are taking immediate action to remedy this,” they wrote.
Wicked is set to be released in cinemas on November 21, but its stars Grande and Erivo recently debuted the film for some lucky Aussie moviegoers at the world premiere in Sydney on November 3.
The duo walked the golden carpet at the State Theatre along with co-stars Ethan Slater, Jeff Goldblum, Jonathan Bailey and Marissa Bode.
“(I’m) overwhelmed with gratitude, insanely grateful,” Grande told The Daily Telegraph at the event. “Everyone has been so kind to us, this has been really fun.”
Added Erivo: “This is the most wonderful experience, we are two very lucky human beings right now.”
This past weekend, the cast premiered the movie in LA before taking the tour to New York, London and Mexico City in coming weeks.
