First look at Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo in official Wicked movie trailer
The trailer for the film adaptation of Wicked has been released - and fans get a first look at Ariana Grande in the role of Glinda.
The highly anticipated trailer for the film adaptation of the hit musical Wicked was released on Thursday – and fans were given a first look at Ariana Grande in the famed role of Glinda.
The Broadway phenomenon has been much loved since it debuted in 2003 with millions of people flocking to theatres worldwide. But now the stage show is making its way to the big screen.
Just like the play, the movie follows young witches Glinda and Elphaba (played by Tony-winner Cynthia Erivo) – the former is blonde and beautiful and the latter is green and misunderstood – who dislike each other at first but soon form an unlikely bond.
In this version, the two meet as students at Shiz University in the Land of Oz where they form a meaningful friendship under the watch of corrupt headmistress, Madame Morrible (Michelle Yeoh).
After an encounter with The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (Jeff Goldblum), the girls are forced on very different paths, with Glinda seduced by power and Elphaba determined to remain true to herself despite the consequences.
As they embrace their new lives, the pair ultimately fulfil their destinies as Glinda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.
In preparation of her new film, Grande hit pause on releasing a new album for the role which she calls the performance of her lifetime. Her last album was Positions in 2020.
“Every piece of me, every minute, every ounce of my heart, my time, my everything that I can give it ... I am spending all my time with Glinda,” she previously said on her R.E.M. Beauty YouTube channel. “So my hands are quite full.”
“I know the material like the back of my hand, but I still have so much to learn,” she added of her role. “I went pretty hard getting ready.”

Erivo can vouch for Grande’s hard work, telling Vanity Fair in March: “I don’t think people realise that she’s got the chops. I don’t think people realise how brilliant this person’s brain and voice and talent is.”
The admiration works both ways with Grande saying of her co-star: “She’s my favourite female voice. When I was watching you sing at the Oscars, I said, ‘I hope someday I get to sing with her.’”
Wicked premieres in cinemas nationwide on November 28
