Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson nearly unrecognisable as he beefs up for new movie The Smashing Machine
The Hollywood star’s muscles looked super-sized on the set of his new movie, which sees him rock a thick wig and prosthetics for the role.
And we thought Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson couldn’t possibly get any more buff.
The Hollywood star’s muscles looked super-sized on the set of his new movie The Smashing Machine, in which he plays former MMA/UFC champion Mark Kerr, aka The Smashing Machine.
Transforming into character, Johnson, 52, looked nearly unrecognisable as he donned a thick wig and prosthetics for the biopic, while wearing a muscle tee and cropped shorts.
Although he is no stranger to training, the actor had to up his game to step into Kerr’s shoes.
“I’m a hard worker, but I realised that I’d have to work harder with this role than anything I’ve ever worked for in my life,” he recently wrote on Instagram.
“This physicality is just one part of the larger journey, that is truly a team effort. Growing and grateful.”
In a separate post, her detailed his exact daily workouts – and it’s not for the faint hearted.
“I wake up in the morning. I do cardio on an empty stomach like I just did when I wake up,” he wrote. “I have a little bit of caffeine. Maybe a 100-150 mg, maybe 200. Have some aminos with that and a probiotic.
“And an hour later I’m doing cardio. Did 40 minutes today of interval cardio. I guess somewhat high intensity.”
“I do 45-50 seconds on the stair master,” he continued. “At level 14 or 15. Then I bring it back down to level seven or eight. And I’ll recover for the next two minutes. So, it’s basically almost a minute high intensity and then two-minute recovery. But where you’re keeping a really nice steady state.”
He also said that he hits the gym again in the afternoons.
“And then I will come back here to the gym and train on the weights and then I’ll have my post-workout shake,” he said.
Johnson’s return to the set comes just three days after he revealed he tore his bursa sac during filming – the small pouches or sacs of fluid typically found in the elbows, hips and kneecaps.
“Elbow got kissed by the boo boo monster,” he shared on Instagram as he posted a photo of his black-and blue bruise.
“No extensive tissue damage. Ruptured bursa sac that will eventually heal. I’ve had much worse, and as always let pain - and tequila - be the guide. Back to work.”
The film follows the story of Kerr, a champion wrestler and mixed martial artist legend who also struggled with addiction away from the ring.
Emily Blunt plays Dawn Staples, Kerr’s wife who finds it challenging tying to fit into his world.
