A sequel to one of the most beloved movies of the 2000s is in the works at Disney.

Disney is developing a sequel to the hit 2006 movie The Devil Wears Prada starring Meryl Streep as Miranda Priestly, the high-powered fashion magazine editor from hell.

The original film’s screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna is in talks to return, as is the original cast.

According to Variety, the storyline follows Priestly as she navigates her career amid the decline of traditional magazine publishing and faces-off against Blunt’s character, now a high-powered executive for a luxury group with advertising dollars that Priestly desperately needs.

Back in 2018, Blunt said she would be game for a Devil Wears Prada sequel if “everyone did it,” but she also expressed concern that a follow-up would dilute “how special the original is.”

While promoting her recent film, The Idea of You, Hathaway told E! she was doubtful about the possibility of a sequel, saying: “I don’t think a continuation of that story is probably ever gonna happen.”

The original movie became a surprise smash hit when it was released during the summer blockbuster season, turning out to be a critically acclaimed hit that earned hundreds of millions worldwide.

Despite being released years ago, the movie has remained incredibly popular within pop culture. Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt and Anne Hathaway recently hit headlines after reuniting on stage for this year’s SAG Awards.

Notably, two sequels to the original book have been released over the years: 2013’s Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns and 2018’s When Life Gives you Lululemons. The former features Hathaway’s character, Andy Sachs, as the editor of a new bridal magazine who remains traumatised by her experience working with Miranda.

Meanwhile, The Devil Wears Prada is also finding new life as a musical, with legendary actress Vanessa Williams playing the role of Miranda Priestly. It’s set to open in London this month (July).
