Best and worst Golden Globes red carpet fashion over the years
Hollywood’s night of nights is about to roll out the red carpet, which has been home to some of the best – and worst – fashion moments.
Some of the most breathtaking looks have been born on the Golden Globes red carpet.
But it’s also been home to some downright shockers.
As we prepare for the 2021 Golden Globes to kick off on Monday, we’ve revisited some of the best and worst red carpet looks at Hollywood’s night of nights in recent years.

BEST
Kate Hudson, 2003
It-girl Kate Hudson, at the height of her How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days fame, made boho high-end in this Valentino gown.
Charlize Theron, 2004
Charlize Theron in an ultra feminine pastel yellow Christian Dior dress. Enough said.
Scarlett Johansson, 2006
ScarJo’s Globes number in ’06 was a simple design but it didn’t need any frills with this blinding red colour. A memorable fashion moment.
Beyonce, 2007
And this is (one of the reasons) why we call her Queen B. Beyonce dripping in gold sequins in this Elie Saab design fit for pop royalty.

Jennifer Lopez, 2009
The singer has graced many best dressed lists over the years, and – along with her famous green Versace gown at the 2000 Grammys – this gold Marchesa frock shows exactly why.
Angelina Jolie, 2011
It’s not a best dressed list without Angelina Jolie. Her green Versace showstopper will go down in Globes fashion folklore.
Margot Robbie, 2014
The year the world was introduced to Aussie legend Margot Robbie. The then Wolf Of Wall Street up-and-comer was elegant in Gucci.
Lupita Nyong’o, 2014
She showed off her outstanding acting chops in 12 Years A Slave, and Lupita Nyong’o was equally as eye-catching on the red carpet in this off-the-shoulder caped Ralph Lauren gown.
Jennifer Lawrence, 2016
Showing off her fresh pixie cut, the Oscar winner was ravishing in red courtesy of Christian Dior.
Zendaya, 2016
The Disney child star turned Emmy-award winning actress and style pioneer was a stand-out on the red carpet wearing mahogany red Marchesa in 2016.
Emma Stone, 2017
Emma Stone never gets it wrong. All eyes were on the actress in 2017 thanks to La La Land, and she gave them a starry Valentino number to marvel over at the Globes.
Kendall Jenner, 2018
Speaking of Jolie, supermodel Kendall Jenner rocked a vibe the actress made famous – the leg. Jenner looked every bit the cover girl she’s become in strapless black, in honour of the Time’s Up movement.
Lady Gaga, 2019
2019 was Lady Gaga’s year. In her first feature film role, she was nominated for all the big awards for A Star Is Born, and the pop star set the style for awards season in a custom billowing powder blue gown by Valentino. With matching hair, of course.
Gemma Chan, 2019
The star looked timeless in deep blue Valentino haute couture with different hemlines, paired with a classic red lip.
WORST
Julia Roberts, 1990
The Hollywood darling is one of the most radiating presences on and off screen, but Julia Roberts raised a few eyebrows at the 1990 event when she wore a large men’s Giorgio Armani suit.
Cameron Diaz, 1999
Screen queen Cameron Diaz wore an unflattering pastel kimono-wrap dress with oh so ’90s crimped hair and black trousers. Not her best look.
Cate Blanchett, 2002
Australian actress Cate Blanchett is truly a red carpet muse. But she had a bit of a slip-up during this outing in a questionable navy striped suit.
Lara Flynne Boyle, 2003
There is nothing wrong with ballerina attire. Except perhaps, when you’re on the red carpet for the Golden Globes.
Nicole Kidman, 2004
Probably the only time Nicole Kidman has ever got it wrong. The uber-plunging neckline, cluttered sequin pattern and gold headband puts this ensemble down the list.
Diane Kruger, 2005
Diane Kruger was savaged by fashion critics in 2005 in this cut-out, strapless dress that looked more like a costume.
Blake Lively, 2009
At the height of Gossip Girl’s fame, which was the most fashion-forward show on television at the time, punters were disappointed with Lively’s ill-fitting prom style dress.
Helena Bonham Carter, 2011
There’s always someone who brings the outlandish, and Helena Bonham Carter didn’t disappoint in that respect at the 2011 Globes in a psychedelic frock, different coloured heels and round sunglasses.
Gwyneth Paltrow, 2020
She’s usually a red carpet frontrunner, but Paltrow put a serious foot wrong in this sheer brown frilled dress, which was dubbed “tragic” and “hideous” by the Twitter mob.
The Golden Globes airs on Foxtel’s Fox Arena at 12pm on Monday
