All the weirdest Met Gala red carpet 2018 looks

WE’VE got bare bums and a pop star-turned-Pope. Yup, it’s the Met Gala — where celebs look ridiculous for “faaar-shun”.

2018 Met Gala: red hot on the red carpet

THE Met Gala is finally here — the most outrageous red carpet of the year, the night when celebrities show us their best “it’s called fashion darling, look it up” outfits and we all wonder if their stylists are secretly trolling them.

Remember, this is the same event that once gifted us Rihanna’s “is it an omelet, or is it clothing?” yellow gown, Sarah Jessica Parker’s homage to Jafar, and, well, this:

This year’s theme for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s charity benefit is “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination” - think crucifixes, heavy gold jewellery, headpieces and racy corsets.

Of course, it’s a theme absolutely tailor-made for Madonna, and she knew it.

The Queen of Pop showed up in an elaborate crucifix-adorned golden crown, with a gothic black lace dress and her face covered in a heavy black netted veil.

Amal Clooney, who — along with Rihanna and Donatella Versace — is co-chair of the event, was one of the first to arrive, wearing both pants and a skirt.

Longtime Met Gala organiser and Vogue editor Anna Wintour was angelic in a white lace dress with a heavy crucifix. Her daughter Bee Shaffer was in tow, decked out in a glamorous red ball gown ... and, of course, a token crucifix-patterned purse.

Given Rihanna’s past style choices (aforementioned omelet, last year’s confetti fiasco), she was the one we’ve all been waiting to see.

And she didn’t disappoint.

Plenty of celebrities have chosen to almost completely ignore the theme this year, but not our RiRi.

Who better to channel for a Catholic theme than the actual Pope himself?

Twitter went wild for the look, branding the pop star an icon.

Rita Ora can also always be counted on to be a bit extra — she wore a bath robe to the MTV EMAs — so we knew she’d deliver at the Met Gala.

Katy Perry took the “heaven” part very literally, and took up loads of space on the red carpet with a huge set of white feather wings.

New mum Kylie Jenner played it incredibly safe in a black strapless dress, but did accessorise with those tiny ‘fashion’ sunnies the Kardashians all seem to be obsessed with that look like the ones Lisa Simpson wears when she suddenly becomes a cool kid.

Her half-sister Kim Kardashian West was a knockout in a low-cut, figure-hugging metallic gold gown, her sleek dark hair hanging down to her waist.

Our photo editor tells me this is Cara Delevingne, but honestly, who knows.

Either way - it’s eye-catching.

At first glance, I assumed Nick Minaj’s dress was actually a huge tomato sauce stain on the carpet but I’ve since realised it’s the train of her dress.

Meanwhile, Ruby Rose looked stunning in a red gown cinched at the waist with a burgundy velvet priest’s girdle and noticeably lighter hair.

Frances McDormand was predictably unpredictable with her red carpet fashion, donning a blue headpiece that looked like a flock of bluebirds attacking her head.

She wore it with a matching high-necked blue cape, with a yellow dress peeking out from underneath.

Whether or not you find the outfit insane, there’s no denying the Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri knows how to work the camera:

Pint-sized pop princess Ariana Grande was a vision in a floaty pastel corset gown - covered in cherubs - and huge cream bow.

Kendall Jenner was a knockout in an off-the-shoulder white top and pants, although it had literally nothing to do with the theme.

Gigi Hadid looked heavenly indeed in a sleek gold and navy gown, covered in strips of beads and glitter.

Lana Del Rey and Jared Leto showed up together, looking like Morticia Adams and Jesus on a fancy date.

The Born to Die singer wore long black hair extensions with an elaborate headdress and several fake knives poking into her chest, while Leto was luxurious in a pale blue velvet suit with a white sash covered in intricate gold embroidery and a gold leaf crown.

Sex and the City star Sarah Jessica Parker came dressed as an actual religious idol, with a towering headpiece.

Blake Lively looked like a medieval queen in a stunning ballgown featuring a voluminous burgundy embroidered skirt. She followed this year’s trend by adding a gold crown to the top of her updo.

Cardi B brought the same kind of ‘medieval royal’ vibe as Lively, but added... a little extra.

YouTube personality and comedian Liza Koshy kept it simple in a black lacy minidress with white collar — and a healthy dose of bottom.

British singer-songwriter Cynthia Erivo decided against going in for an eyebrow tweeze ahead of the big event, and instead just covered up with stick-on jewels.

Kate Moss proved she literally gives zero f**ks about dress-up parties, totally bypassing the theme and instead wearing her signature LBD. It’s possible that the feathers were her nod to the “heavenly” aspect, but honestly, we doubt it.

Bella Hadid’s outfit is kind of confusing, but we think it’s in theme..?

Kate Bosworth managed to do what so many brides before her never get the opportunity to — get another wear out of her wedding dress.

Meghan Markle’s good friend Misha Nonoo also went all out, admirably donning a religious-looking white high ruffle collar — despite the fact they’re flattering on approximately no one.
