Why celebrities aren’t looking forward to this year’s Met Gala

IT’S BILLED as fashion’s night of nights and is more glamorous than the Oscars. But according to insiders, the event is anything but fun.

IT’S SUPPOSED to be fashion’s night of nights with a dress code more glamorous than the Academy Awards.

But despite the chance to strut their stuff in top designer clothes, celebrities are reportedly not all excited at the thought of attending this year’s Met Gala.

Ahead of this year’s ball, here is everything you need to know about who will be attending — and why they might not be thrilled at the prospect.

WHAT IS THE MET GALA?

First established in 1946, the Met Gala is held every year as a fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute.

Timed to coincide with the opening of the museum’s annual fashion exhibition, the event has since evolved into an elite red carpet affair at the New York museum.

All 600-plus guests must be personally approved by Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour, with tables available for an eye-watering $364,581 and individual seats for $39,772.

For celebrities, designers will usually purchase tables and invite the A-lister to attend as guests of the brand.

Each year the Met Gala has a theme and guests are expected to adhere to the dress code, with this year’s choice Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.

Last year’s guest list included everyone from Kim Kardashian, Serena Williams and Gigi Hadid.

WHY CELEBRITIES DISLIKE IT

According to Page Six, celebrities find dressing up in custom designer couture and walking the red carpet a bit of a punish — hard to believe, right?

But one Hollywood handler said the Met Gala was the “Mean Girls” of events, with Wintour reportedly controlling everything from when celebrities can arrive to where they sit.

Some celebrities were opting out of attending this year’s event after attending previous galas, they claimed.

Another anonymous Gala regular said the atmosphere “isn’t super friendly”, with celebrities only hanging out with other celebrities.

“If you walk into the girls bathroom, all the celebrities are hanging out together, smoking together and ignoring everyone else,” they added.

Other insiders told the New York Post it came down to how the event was structured, with celebrities reportedly not allowed to bring their own publicists or managers with them on the red carpet.

While this might seem far-fetched, celebrities handlers play an important role during red carpet walks, preventing wardrobe malfunctions and organising interviews.

Celebrities such as Amy Schumer, Lena Dunham and Tina Fey have previously spoken about their dislike of the event.

Gwyneth Paltrow told USA Today she found the event “so unfun” after attending the 2013 Gala.

“It was boiling. It was too crowded. I did not enjoy it at all,” she said.

WHAT AUSTRALIAN CELEBRITIES WILL ATTEND

While it’s not yet been confirmed which Australian celebrities will attend this year, in previous years the guest list has included A-list actors Margot Robbie, Nicole Kidman, Ruby Rose, Rose Byrne, Naomi Watts and Hugh Jackman.

Other Aussies have included Baz Luhrmann, Miranda Kerr and Jordan Barrett.

International guests confirmed this year include Blake Lively, Rihanna, Sophie Turner and Madonna.
