Meghan Markle’s attempt at becoming the next global lifestyle guru has seemingly landed like a tonne of bricks following its debut on Netflix this week.

The Duchess of Sussex’s With Love, Meghan cookery program landed on Netflix on Tuesday – and features the royal catching up with pals and showing off her kitchen skills.

Sadly for Meghan, critics and audiences alike have been less than kind about the new series and it’s been labelled everything from “dystopian” to “smug” in a series of savage reviews.

The Express wrote that the show sees Meghan putting on an “act” for viewers in a bid to win over a new legion of fans.

“Through her ongoing habit of making up rhymes, showing a childlike view of the world plus a desire to connect and tidy things by rounding them up,” said the publication.

“She dances about, squeals and she acts excited about everything.

“Meghan’s unreality show is also a dystopian nightmare for feminists, a glimpse of how women might have looked had we never got the vote and been consigned to a Jane Austen world of sprigged cotton and flower arranging, where survival meant marrying rich and entertaining the locals.”

The Times’ said that the Netflix series portrays Meghan as “smug”, showcasing her “extreme wealth” to viewers who will never achieve such a lavish lifestyle.

“Here is a duchess presenting her extreme wealth and mind-bogglingly exclusive lifestyle as if it is available to anyone who cares enough to pop a twee personal label on a homemade beeswax candle or lay a sprig of fresh lavender on a towel,” wrote the publication’s review.

The Guardian gave the show an abysmal one of out five stars, writing that “what With Love, Meghan vibrates with most is a vacuous, over-styled joylessness.”

While The Independent gave a similarly scathing review, writing that the series’ “heady blend of aesthetic curation, inspiring truisms, and those inescapable edible flowers might well leave you feeling a bit queasy”.

News.com.au’s own Daniela Elser labelled the show “absurd” and said it “couldn’t have come at a worse time”.

Meanwhile, many viewers were quick to notice what appeared to be a subtle dig at the royal family at the very end of the eight episodes, during which she admits that her “new chapter” was “part of that creativity that I’ve missed so much”.

It unfolded during the final moments of the series, while Meghan was hosting a small party with guests including her mother, Doria Ragland, and her husband, Prince Harry.

“I just want to raise a glass to you guys. This feels like a new chapter that I’m so excited that I’m able to share and I’ve been able to learn from all of you. So I just thank you for all the love and support,” she said.

“And here we go, there’s a business! All of that is part of that creativity that I’ve missed so much, so thank you for loving me so much and celebrating with me.”
