Security weighs in on Meghan Markle’s horrific claim about Archie’s nursery fire
A South African security insider has weighed in on Meghan Markle’s horrific claim about Archie’s nursery fire.
Meghan Markle’s claims that a fire broke out in son Archie’s nursery during her 2019 tour of South Africa have been confirmed by a security insider.
A source close to the Duchess of Sussex told The Citizen that the incident had taken place at the official residence where the family was staying in Cape Town.
“The heater burnt. The house didn’t burn, the rooms didn’t burn. I didn’t see the fire itself, but I saw the heater when it came out of the room. The plastic was severely melted,” the source told the newspaper.
“We were driving in convoy and all of a sudden, the convoy with Meghan broke away. We followed after … We weren’t sure what was going on.”
The source added: “When we got to the house, the housekeeper called me and showed me the heater that was burnt and told me what had happened and that the child was not in the room at the time the heater burnt, they smelt it, went up and saw the smoke.
“When we stopped at the residence, I can tell you that she didn’t get out of the car like a lady normally gets out. She bolted into the house.”

The source told the outlet that British security travelling with the couple recommended they not make the accident public.
“When we were outside, we discussed what we are going to do about this. It was a new heater that was just purchased and the consensus was ‘guys, this is gonna look bad for us or for Cape Town, South Africa, or for whoever’,” they said.
“The British Police guys actually told us ‘guys, just leave it as is, don’t talk about this’.”
And they added: “We decided we are not going to expose this thing. That’s why we kept quiet about it back then because we knew we were going to get backlash.”
The source said the royals could no longer live in the official residence.
“What was significant is, we immediately moved out of that house,” they said.
“But the second place, where they went to, was not even five minutes away from the official residence where we were stationed and none of us were told where they were staying after the fire.”
Last week, the former Suits actress launched her long-awaited Spotify series, Archetypes.
In the first episode, Meghan told her friend, US tennis champion Serena Williams, about the horror moment she found out her four-month-old son Archie’s nursery had caught fire during the tour of South Africa.
Luckily, Archie’s then-nanny – named only as Lauren – was looking after the tot in a house in Nyanga and took the boy out of the room before a heater caught ablaze.
Meghan explained how she was then separated from her son and forced to attend a royal engagement.
“As a mother, you go, ‘Oh, my God, what?’” she said.
“Everyone’s in tears, everyone’s shaken. And what do we have to do? Go out and do another official engagement.
“I said, ‘This doesn’t make any sense. Can you just tell people what happened?’ And I think the focus ends up being on how it looks instead of how it feels.
“And part of the humanising and the breaking through of these labels and these archetypes and these boxes that we’re put into is having some understanding on the human moments behind the scenes that people might not have any awareness of and to give each other a break.
“Because we did – we had to leave our baby.”
