Why Eugenie can wear a tiara but Beatrice can’t

DESPITE being the older sister and closer in line to the throne there’s a very good reason why Beatrice can’t wear a tiara.

What you need to know about Princess Eugenie’s wedding

WHEN Princess Eugenie ties the knot with Jack Brooksbank she will have one more thing in common with Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton — and it isn’t just that all three of them are married.

Eugenie’s wedding day will be the first occasion she is allowed to wear a tiara and as she exits St George’s Chapel as a married woman, the 28-year-old will have been granted access to the royal family’s impressive collection of crowns.

Sadly Eugenie’s older sister Beatrice won’t be afforded the same luxury thanks to centuries-old tradition.

According to British jewellery expert Geoffrey Munn, custom dictates that only married women can wear tiaras.

“Any woman may wear one, but ancient tradition has it that they must be a bride or already married,” he told Irish website Her.

“The tiara has its roots in classical antiquity and was seen as an emblem of the loss of innocence to the crowning of love.

“One of the mainstays of European royalty and aristocracy is to do what you have always done and formal dress, jewellery, and tiaras are just part of this.”

It’s speculated that Eugenie will wear the York tiara worn by her mother Sarah on her wedding day.

The crown was custom made for the Duchess of York by jewellers Garrard and still belongs to Sarah despite her divorce from Andrew in 1996.

On her wedding day in 2011, Kate wore the Cartier halo scroll tiara while Meghan donned Queen Mary’s filigree tiara at her May nuptials.

The archaic custom is sure to rile Beatrice, who has been much less lucky in love compared to her sister.

Beatrice broke up with her boyfriend of 10 years, Uber exec Dave Clark in 2016 and hasn’t been publicly linked to anyone since.

The pair, who had been dating since Beatrice was 17, reportedly split after she gave him a marriage ultimatum.

To make matters worse just six months later Dave became engaged to New York advertising executive Lynn Anderson and the couple married in July 2018.
