Royal watchers call out William over behaviour in viral video

Royal watchers are calling out Prince William over a viral video, which shows he and Prince Harry’s contrasting behaviour towards their wives.

The tension behind William and Harry's surprise royal reunion

It was the reunion to end all reunions – the new Prince and Princess of Wales mourning the loss of Queen Elizabeth II alongside the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

With the highly anticipated gathering of Prince William and Prince Harry and their wives came an influx of analysis of how the royals interacted with one another, as their tumultuous relationship still remains centre stage.

However, in viral video shared across multiple platforms, social media users erupted with criticism for the Prince of Wales, the next royal to inherit the crown, for his apparent lack of chivalry with wife Kate Middleton, while praising the Duke of Sussex for his treatment of wife Meghan Markle.

In the footage — which you can view at the top of this page — as the two couples prepare to depart the massive crowd outside of Windsor Castle gathering to pay their respects to the Queen, Prince Harry can be seen ushering his wife to their shared car, attentively opening and closing the door for her, while the Prince and Princess of Wales separately enter the car.

Fans eviscerated the elder monarch, with one Twitter user simply writing, “Harry holds the car door open for his wife. Makes sure she’s safe. Wills does not. Case closed.”

Several users reflected on the incident, drawing comparisons between William and his father, King Charles III, with Harry and his mother, the late Diana.

One user wrote, “Harry is a gentleman. William however acts like his father.” Another person added, “Harry is a true king and son of Diana. Look how he cares for his wife.”

Another Twitter user said, “One thing is for sure: He is not going to treat his wife like his father did his mother. That’s what the British public don’t get. He opened the door for his wife on his own accord, and his wife responded by saying thank you. That’s mutual respect.”

One TikTok user offered, “He didn’t want what happened to his mother to happen to Meghan. He is a good husband.”

While the majority of users were critical of William, some others disagreed, with one writing, “Class act from William inviting his brother and SIL despite all the hurt caused and the lies.”

Prior to the Queen’s death, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex had been in the country for several events, one of which featured Meghan as a keynote speaker.

Brutal reaction to Meghan caught on camera

There was more tension during the two royal couples’ visit with mourners outside Windsor Castle, as Meghan Markle copped a decidedly frosty reception from at least a few royal fans as she pressed the flesh.

It was a surprising return to royal duties for Meghan and Harry, who famously quit the royal family more than two years ago, fleeing to America for a brand new life — and a series of tell-all interviews in which they publicly called out “the firm,” claiming they were offered little support and even faced racism from within the royal family.

Is that all now water under the bridge, as the family comes together to mourn the Queen? Maybe so, but it seems some Monarchists hold more of a grudge.

As the Duchess of Sussex made her way along the throngs of mourners, shaking each outstretched hand, one woman could be seen dropping her head, avoiding Meghan’s gaze.

After Meghan had passed, the woman then looked up at the person next to her with a smirk, shaking her head and laughing.

Others around her appeared to give the Duchess the cold shoulder, not reaching their hands out for a greeting. Another woman could be seen putting her sunglasses on as she came face-to-face with Meghan.

“Lady in the blue having none of it,” a viral tweet proclaimed, with vision of the awkward moment hastily recorded off a TV screen.

With the eyes of the world on the royal family, it was one of a few awkward, unscripted moments taking off on social media this weekend. Another came from the new King, Charles III, who was caught on camera venting his frustrations that his table had not been adequately cleared as he took his seat to sign the oath for his accession ceremony.

And other photos of William and Kate from the same event sparked fierce debate, as royal watchers questioned why Kate was apparently keeping her distance from her husband, in comparison to Meghan and Harry walking hand-in-hand.

Meanwhile, official details of the Queen’s funeral have been released by Buckingham Palace, with the ceremony set to take place at 11am on Monday September 19 (that’s 8pm on the same day here in Australian, AEST time).

Here in Australia, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has confirmed Australians will be given a day off to mark the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

A National Day of Mourning for the late monarch has been declared for September 22, the Thursday after the PM returns from the Queen’s funeral in London.
