The late Queen Elizabeth was “sad” that he and Meghan Markle wished to step back from their Royal duties, Prince Harry has said.

The Duke of Sussex talked about the Queen’s reaction to Megxit on US breakfast show Good Morning America, one of a slew of interviews he has done to publicise his newly released book Spare.

He has also appeared on America’s CBS and Britain’s ITV and is due to appear on the US ABC network on Tuesday afternoon, Australia time.

During his sit down interviews he has hit out at the British press; griped at having to pay for his own security; criticised Camilla, the Queen consort; accused his brother Prince William of attacking him and said he will likely never return to the UK or be a working Royal.

But he has also been scrutinised too, particularly from ITV’s Tom Bradby, who said some of the media interest in his life was actually warranted such as his drug use; asked how he married his call for privacy while revealing his family’s private discussions in public and has been called out for his “scathing” accusations about Camilla.

Queen knew what was going on

On the softer Good Morning America sit-down, on Monday morning in the US, host Michael Strahan asked the Prince if the Queen was upset that he wanted to reduce his Royal role.

Harry said the Queen “knew what was going on”.

“My grandmother and I had a very good relationship.

“I had many, many conversations with over the years and in the run-up to the point of this change.

“It was never a surprise to anybody, least of all her. She knew how hard it was,” he said.

Nonetheless, it was clear the Queen would have preferred for to him to remain within the family fold.

“She never said to me that she was angry (but) I think she was sad that it got to that point.”

The Duke also told Strahan that he couldn’t envisage ever returning to Britain or being a working Royal again.

“Even if there was an agreement or an arrangement with me and my family, there is a third party that is going to do everything they can to make sure that isn’t impossible. Not stopping us from necessarily going back, but making it unsurvivable,” he said, in an apparent reference to the British press.

‘That’s really sad because that is essentially breaking the relationship between us [the Sussexes and the Royal Family].

“If there was something in the future where we can continue to support the Commonwealth, then that’s of course on the table, but there’s so much more that needs to happen between now and then, and so much that can happen,” he added.

Harry added that he and Meghan did not want to relinquish their senior royal roles but had been backed into a corner by The Firm’s inflexibility to let them live overseas and pay their own way.

“We were based in Windsor. That was where we genuinely thought we were going to spend the rest of our lives,” he said.

“We were trying to find a different way to work, but for one reason or another, despite the fact that it already exists within the family, we weren’t allowed to do things slightly differently.”
