Prince Harry makes surprise comedy debut amid tumultuous year

It’s been a while since Prince Harry has shown off his funny side – but he certainly gave it a red hot go at a military benefit in NYC this week.

Prince Harry has shown off his comedy chops, proving he’s happy to make fun of himself.

The Duke of Sussex, 39, gave a tongue-in-cheek speech on Monday at the 17th Annual Stand Up for Heroes Benefit, an event presented by the New York Comedy Festival and Bob Woodruff Foundation in support of veterans, service members and their families.

Harry joked during the appearance that he’s “someone who never gets scrutinised” so hadn’t “had to prepare much”, according to People magazine.

“But I have been working on this particular act for quite some time, and everyone I know tells me it’s perfect,” he deadpanned.

“No, these aren’t people who just tell me what I want to hear. Oh no.”

Harry’s speech then took a more serious turn, as he spoke about how “special” the military community is, as it shares “incredible highs and painful lows”.

“It is unique and that is hugely important to society both during active service and after. Our community is valued more than you’ll ever know, and nights like this are testament to that.”

Harry has dedicated much of his career to supporting and promoting the welfare of servicemen and women – along with their families – after himself serving in the military of 10 years, which included tours of Afghanistan in 2007 and 2008.

In 2014, he also famously founded the Invictus Games, a multi-sport event for wounded, injured and sick military personnel.

Harry wrapped up his speech on an emotional note, sharing a personal message to his peers and their families.

“I salute each and every one of you, my brothers, my sisters, my friends, through respect, understanding and admiration,” he told them.

“Please remember, if any you feel lost or alone with all this going on, don’t forget the power of purpose and upholding the important values you know so well. That always gives you the clarity and company you need.”

A host of other celebrities were in attendance at the benefit, held at the Lincoln Centre in New York City, including Tom Hanks, his wife Rita Wilson, and singer Bruce Springsteen, who also performed during the evening.

Harry’s appearance at the event came just hours after he and wife Meghan Markle sensationally released a statement, refuting widespread reports that they’d rejected an invitation to his father’s landmark 75th birthday in London next week.

The royal family is set to gather for a low-key, intimate party at Clarence House on November 14, with The Sunday Times claiming over the weekend that King Charles’ youngest son had declined the offer to join them.

However, the Sussex’s spokesman has released a statement, pointedly remarking that they were actually left off the guest list entirely.

But on Monday, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex hit back, denying the claim and putting the blame for their lack of attendance on Harry’s family.

“In response to UK media headlines, there has been no contact regarding an invitation to his majesty’s upcoming birthday,” Ashley Hansen told the New York Post.

“It is disappointing the Sunday Times has misreported this story.”
