‘Little bit nervous’: Lisa Wilkinson’s surprising take on Queen Consort Camilla’s first public act

Lisa Wilkinson has rushed to the UK in the wake of the Queen’s death – and she had a surprising take on Queen Consort Camilla’s first public act.

Queen Elizabeth II’s coffin arrives in Edinburgh

Lisa Wilkinson has claimed the new Queen Consort, Camilla, might be feeling the pressure after being suddenly thrust into the spotlight in the wake of Queen Elizabeth’s death.

Wilkinson has rushed to London to cover the historic moment for The Project after the monarch died “peacefully” at Balmoral at the age of 96 late last week, leaving royal fans bereft.

Charles immediately became King after his mother’s death, and it was made official at a sombre proclamation ceremony at St James’s Palace, which was also attended by Prince William and Camilla, who assumed the title of Queen Consort.

But speaking to UK correspondent Lucy McDonald outside Windsor Castle, Wilkinson claimed that Camilla – who wore a black dress paired with pearls – seemed “nervous” during the event, which was the first ever proclamation ceremony to be televised.

“Camilla looked a little bit nervous during that proclamation ceremony yesterday. Did you notice that or was that just me?” Wilkinson asked.

McDonald agreed, claiming Camilla “kind of looked like she wanted to go home and have a cup of tea – or a glass of sherry”.

“Well that would be absolutely understandable,” Wilkinson responded.

The King paid tribute to his “beloved wife” shortly before signing the proclamation before witnesses.

Meanwhile, McDonald praised Charles’ performance in the wake of his mother’s death.

“He does seem like a more loving and emotionally attuned pair of hands than many of us thought,” she said.

“There is a lot of political and economic upheaval here in Britain and we are looking for some stability and we hope he can provide that.

“I was actually quite nervous for him. It’s a lot. He’s the longest heir-in-waiting, he’s had a lot of time to think about what he would do when he became King, and I thought it went brilliantly.”

She said the King had set a united tone immediately by delivering a speech which focused on “love, loyalty and respect”.

It comes as his feuding sons William and Harry and their wives Kate and Meghan put on a united display during a surprise walkabout yesterday, when they met with wellwishers and examined notes and floral tributes to the Queen left by the public outside Windsor Castle.
