George and Amal Clooney ‘to be godparents to Meghan and Harry’s baby’
In a major break with tradition, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have reportedly chosen one of Hollywood’s top A-list couples as godparents for their first-born child.
George and Amal Clooney are preparing to be godparents to Prince Harry and Meghan’s first-born child.
Harry and Meghan have become extremely close to the A-list pair, who were the star guests at the royal wedding in May.
Amal, a human-rights lawyers, has a longstanding close friendship with the Duchess of Sussex.
Family insiders told DailyMail.com Hollywood star Clooney, the father of one-year-old twins, considers himself almost a “shoo-in” to be asked.
George has reportedly “told a couple of people he has a strong hunch” that they’ll be among the couples asked to form an important role in the child’s life.
The Hollywood pair flew Meghan and Harry via private jet to their luxury residence on Lake Como after their May nuptials, where they received a crash course in parenting from the powerhouse couple.
George’s cousin Ben Breslin, told DailyMail.com the 57-year-old would make a “wonderful” godfather to the royal baby.
The new addition is due in early 2019.
“I’m all for it. He’d make a wonderful godfather, he’d make a wonderful just about anything — he’s a good guy,” Breslin said.
If the Clooneys are named as godparents, it will represent a major break with tradition in that it will be the first time that a major Hollywood star has been chosen.
Traditionally, royal godparents are friends and relatives, but Prince Harry and Meghan did not make the cut when Prince Louis was christened in July.
Prince Louis, the youngest son of Prince William and wife Catherine, has six godparents: Nicholas Van Cutsem, Guy Pelly, Harry Aubrey-Fletcher, Lady Laura Meade, Hannah Gillingham and Lucy Middleton.
Van Cutstem, Aubey-Fletcher and Pelly are childhood friends of Prince William. Lady Laura Meadeis the wife of William’s close friend James Meade. Hannah Gillingham is a childhood friend of Catherine while Lucy Middleton is a cousin.
Louis’s older brother Prince George has seven godparents. They include Zara Tindall, Prince William’s cousin, as well as William van Cutsem, Hugh Grosvenor, the Duke of Westminster, Oliver Baker and Emilia Jardine-Paterson. Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton, a former private secretary to William, and Julia Samuel, a good friend of his mother Princess Diana, rounded out the list.
Princess Charlotte, meanwhile, has five godparents. They include more good friends of the couple — Sophie Carter, James Reade, and Thomas van Straubenzee. Adam Middleton, Catherine’s cousin, was also named as a godfather, and William’s cousin Laura Fellowes, the daughter of Princess Diana’s sister Lady Jane Fellowes, was named a godmother.
