Calls for Meghan and Harry to reveal royal who was concerned about Archie’s skin colour

In the wake of Harry and Meghan’s tell-all interview with Oprah, the race is on to find the culprit at the centre of one of the couple’s most explosive claims.

The Royals: A History of Racism

In the wake of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s tell-all interview with Oprah, the race is on to find the culprit at the centre of one of the couple’s most explosive claims.

During the candid chat, Meghan – and then Harry – revealed there were concerns about how dark their son Archie’s skin would be before his birth.

There were several “concerns and conversations about dark his skin might be when he was born”, Meghan told Oprah in the two-hour chat, leaving the host momentarily speechless.

“That was relayed to me from Harry. Those were conversations that family had with him.”

Meghan said it was safe to assume the concern among some royals was that their mixed race child could be “too dark”.

The couple both refused to reveal who made the comments, with Meghan saying “that would be very damaging to them”.

Harry, meanwhile, said he “was shocked” by the conversation, adding it was one, “I’m never going to share.”

As the interview aired in the US, then Australia and the UK, “a big guessing game all around the world” over who had the conversation with Harry quickly ensued.

“I thought it was very touching that Harry is still choosing to protect the identity of whoever that was,” CBS’ Gayle King said on CBS This Morning.

Oprah, who joined the show to share her reaction on the revealing interview, confirmed that Harry “did not share the identity with me”.

“But he wanted to make sure that I knew, and if he had an opportunity to share it, that it was not his grandmother nor his grandfather (who) were a part of those conversations,” she said.

Out of all the claims the couple made about the royal family, the concerns about Archie’s skin tone will likely cause the most damage.

Speculation on social media over who made the comments has largely landed in two camps: Harry’s father, Prince Charles, and his brother, Prince William.

“Harry said he’s ‘never going to share’ the conversation about Archie’s skin tone but I’m now totally convinced it was Charles,” author Jenna Guillaume wrote on Twitter.

“It was Charles or William for sure. Someone close enough and unexpected enough for Harry to be deeply hurt.

“Phillip it’s a given he’d say sh*t like that and you’d be like ‘urgh, racist grandpa back at it again’ and move on.”

“It was Charles, the next king of England,” writer Charlotte Clymer tweeted, while somebody else weighed in that “I definitely think it was Wills”.

“I say William. His relationship with William soured BEFORE he married Meghan. He tried to convince him to ‘slow down’. Charles walked Meghan down the aisle. It was William,” one woman said.

British journalist Dan Wootten accused Oprah of “allowing this grotesque and damaging guessing game to continue” by not mentioning “Charles or William”.

‘LITTLE POINT’ IN COUPLE AIRING CLAIM

Speaking to Sunrise this morning, Princess Diana’s former bodyguard Ken Wharfe said that Harry and Meghan should reveal which royal family member they claim to have made racist comments.

“If you’re not going to tell us, there’s very little point in saying it,” he said.

“Because until we know who it is, you know, this can be laid to a proper investigation to establish it and I, like you and many others, you know, racism is just unforgivable.

“But if this was said, as far as I’m concerned, both Meghan and Harry have a duty to lay that person’s name for it to be investigated. Otherwise it’s like going to the police and saying, ‘Look, my house has been burgled, I know who’s done it but I’m not telling you.’ You can’t really do that.

“So I think really laying bare this issue is one thing, but I think surely we should now know who it is for an investigation to take place.”

Buckingham Palace – which is yet to respond to the interview – is under pressure to respond to the allegations.

Former press secretary to the Queen, Charles Anson, told Sky News that he thinks “the palace will be looking to try and reflect on this interview and take some of the issues forward that don’t exacerbate things and that lead to some reconciliation”.
